Queen approves PM request to suspend parliament - cutting time to block no-deal Brexit
Sky news ^ | 28 Aug 2019 | Greg Heffer

The Queen has approved Boris Johnson's request to suspend parliament from the middle of next month, which will restrict MPs' ability to block a no-deal Brexit.

In a move prompting a furious political row, parliament will be prorogued in the week beginning 9 September until 14 October.

This is the date on which a new Queen's Speech - detailing the legislative agenda of Mr Johnson's administration - will be held.

...The action will see parliament lose a number of sitting days prior to the UK's scheduled departure from the EU on 31 October.

Asked if he was denying opposition MPs the time to stop a no-deal Brexit, the prime minister said: "No, that is completely untrue.

He added there would be "ample time" for MPs to debate Brexit both before and after a "crucial" Brussels summit of EU leaders on 17 October.

Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly also downplayed the significance of the action, claiming the government was planning a Queen's Speech "just as all new governments do".

...In a letter sent to all MPs, the prime minister said legislation to ratify a new Brexit deal will be the "central feature" of the Queen's Speech, if an agreement is reached.

"These weeks leading up to the European Council on 17/18 October are vitally important for the sake of my negotiations with the EU," he added.

"Member states are watching what parliament does with great interest and it is only by showing unity and resolve that we stand a chance of securing a new deal that can be passed by parliament."

...Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage predicted such a scenario, posting on Twitter: "The government's announcement today makes a confidence motion now certain, a general election more likely and is seen as a positive move by Brexiteers."

Boy, I wish our President could just tell Congress to go away and shut up.
Our country would be far better off.

Sounds like the Queen isn’t really on board with this whole EU thing...

Good for her.

What pray tell is left to debate?

The citizens voted to leave. The remainers drug their feet in vain hope of acting against the voter’s will

The future debate if any will simply amount to whining

The real debate will or should be put forward about the winning measures to proceed

There is just that silly constitution preventing him from doing that.

Trump spent a lot of time with the Queen.

Funny how ReMoaners claim this is undemocratic but don’t feel preventing Brexit which the people voted for is undemocratic.

well, there is one big debate that was done - which is that

52% voted for a kind of leave. No one ever asked them what kind of leave they wanted. The fact is (based on the results of the May election) that about 40% do support a hard Brexit.

It’s too late for that debate - that should have happened in 2016.

Now the only debate would be: 1. will the opposition and dissenting tories ahve enough votes to call a no-confidence and then a general election? Or no

The queen plays her cards close to her chest. We can’t say anything about her opinions. On this matter she was following the right constitutional moves

A no-deal Brexit could be relatively easy or very hard, depending on whether the EU seriously attempts to punish the Brits for leaving. This of course raises the question of whether the recalcitrant stance of the EU to date is a harbinger of things to come, or just a tough negotiating stance intended to keep the UK in. Brexiters are hoping that the EU is bluffing and that it will collaborate on a constructive solution once the deed is done. Time will tell.

The linked problem for the EU, of course, is that if Brexit is relatively painless, other EU states will be more inclined to follow. The EU may attempt to sabotage the UK mainly as a warning to the others. The Brits need to keep cool and understand that EU thuggery is nothing personal; it's directed at Italy, Spain, Greece and others. By the same token, other countries considering leaving need to take a lesson and (1) leave sooner rather than later and (2) leave together. The EU true believers will react to Brexit by attempting to move very swiftly to the full abolition of national sovereignty. The window for leaving will probably close rapidly.

154 years ago, the Northern states accepted a civil war to keep the South in the Union. At that point, the United States was only 80 years old. ("Fourscore and seven years," by Lincoln's count, was 1776 to the date of the Gettysburg Address.) The EU has been an evolving project; while the idea of the EU as a complete nation state has been lurking around for a long time, the accretion of real sovereignty to the EU central organs is a much more recent thing.

The Europeans are clearly not to the point at which they would fight to keep the UK in. Even in 1861, it's not clear that the North would have accepted war had South Carolina not fired the first shot. Nation building is a tricky process. As a practical matter, the EU countries still maintain their own militaries. If the EU had actually formed a unified EU army under unitary EU direction … and if the EU had a centralized EU police force with police powers in all members states … we might be seeing a very different endgame. At this point, the EU is still, barely, a confederation of sovereign states, and the UK is exiting a treaty. It is not yet a full federal union, which would make Brexit a matter of secession and rebellion.

“parliament will be prorogued”

I love prorogies, some with potatoes, some with cheese and even some with sauerkraut.

Of course this would never happen in America unless America was in SHTF mode but I will say the House pretty much has suspended themselves since President Trump was elected. The Senate is equally worthless with very few exceptions. As a whole,Congress does absolutely nothing for the country. We have a very unbalanced system right now.

Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl,
But she doesn’t have a lot to say.

Her Magesty's a pretty nice girl,
But she changes from day to day.

One day I'm gonna tell her I lover her a lot,
But I gotta get a belly full of wine.

Her Magesty's a pretty nice girl,
One day I'm gonna make her mine.
