Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksens comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time.... ....The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!

The Chinese are making noises about putting a naval base there. The prez does not want that and is looking for a way to stop it.

56000 of them? That has the impact a pimple on a sea fleas ass on a gray whale when compared to their impact on our elections.
Thank God for how our system is set up, or these people would have no say! If Greenland became a State, those people would have a HUGE amount of say in these US. Those 56M people would, just for them, control:
1.96% of the Senate.
.23% of the House.
being only .018% of the total US population.
That's SIXTEEN TIMES more rep per person than Delaware, which is also small enough to have only one House rep. And, TEN TIMES more rep per person than Wyoming, the current State with the least population.

Territory. 56000 barely makes a town, never mind a city or a state. They also like home rule.

It was a joke. Trump retweeted someone who photoshopped the Trump Tower there. Liberals and #NeverTrumpers have no sense of humor...

Now they're going to have to throw Denmark itself into the deal too. Yeah, but we don't want the muzzies. They have to go to Sweden or Norway.

Declare war on Denmark, Greenland may be large, but the Danes should surrender with in 6 hours.

Who says it's never going to happen in the future? People who know nothing about anything, that's who. Not all successful negotiations happen overnight. Who cares about blowing off Denmark one time? I mean really. What's going to happen over it? Nothing, except some embarrassment that they were blown off by the United States.
I have friends in Greenland, that I met decades ago when I was stationed at Thule. They have absolutely no desire to be a part of the US. They are laughing at Trump for thinking otherwise. The fact that Trump was so thin-skinned about it speaks volumes.
You and plenty of others don't care about blowing off allies, but those allies shed blood alongside us in Afghanistan. When you are attacked, and your friends join up with you, and they shed blood alongside you, you don't treat them like this.
I don't expect Trump to understand that last point, because the Trump family is somehow allergic to military service, but I do expect those around him to understand it.
To: Nipfan
You are exactly correct. Not only that, but withdrawing from a state visit, invited by the Queen of Denmark, is a snub to the whole country which is unlikely to be forgotten any time soon. A huge amount of preparation goes into these events (just look at the UK state visit) and it looks petty to withdraw so late on what looks like nothing more than a whim.
This is a rare own goal, Im afraid.
Well said. I'm beginning to think a lot of people who try and make an excuse for every mistake that Trump makes are....I don't even know where to begin. I just know that if Obama was doing some of this stuff, they would be losing their minds, but Trump does it, and he's playing some kind of 3D or 4D chess or something.
Then again, I don't have the time to sit around and watch Fox News for hours upon hours, so who knows, maybe they are living in some kind of bubble.
To: af_vet_rr
Oh ok. You know a guy - that changes everything. Whatever possibility of something happening in the future between nations is now off I guess.
Denmark spent about 40 lives in Afghanistan while we lost over 2000. Maybe you don’t watch the news much, but our allies are never bashful about criticizing and insulting us, which is particularly ballsy considering they’re basically powerless to defend themselves against any real threat without us. They also don’t contribute their full obligation to NATO, but yes, let’s bend over backwards not offending these Great Allies.
This is why Trump is president and not some know-it-all retired grunt. Maybe you should take it up with Tom Cotton who likely saw a lot more action than you ever did and is taking credit for floating the idea to the president.
To: af_vet_rr
Since you address your post to me without even remotely responding to the points I made in my #132, I will make it easy for you and spell out exactly what needs to be addressed in order for you to justify your denunciation of the President.
- Do you think China, if left unchecked, is a threat to the US?
- Do you think we should just look away while China is quickly increasing its influence in Greenland, to the point of threatening our base there?
- If it is confirmed that Denmark took the initiative to invite China to invest in developing three airports in Greenland, do you think it is okay for our ally to do such a thing?
While you have so far avoided the real issues, I must say it is very clever of you to make sure to provide a lot of distractions, like lecturing us about how we should treat our allies, bringing up obama (who will no doubt hobnob with and bow to everyone), and attacking people who watch Fox, etc.
> I don’t expect Trump to understand that last point, because the Trump family is somehow allergic to military service, but I do expect those around him to understand it.
So now what, apparently everyone doesnt understand it except you
Whats your IQ?!

Or maybe we can ship them to Antarctica. (We can let them call it "Antarcticastan".)

I did tell you people. We did fall down some cosmic rabbit hole around 2007.
And, Trump’s behaviour is really weird.
That said, after thinking about it. Greenland probably would be better off under US “ownership”. For now, Greenland is just managing.
I guess in cases like this, what matters most is what the people who live there think.
Right of self determination and all that.
Greenland being rather exceptional in that case with so few people in such a huge area.

The reason Greenland is Danish at all, is because it was a Norse Viking colony.
Eric the Red with his son Leif Erikson who went all the way to the American continent.
So, Greenland was Norwegian for the longest time along with Iceland, but when Denmark took over Norway - they took over all those territories too...
And, with Norwegian independence later, those areas stayed with Denmark.
Norway infact tried to annex Greenland or take it back.
Under a certain minister called Quisling in the 1930’s.
I think it ended up with some international court ruling that it belonged to Denmark.

There is a large number of people...
We had the same here with GWB. These huge mass here, who no matter what he did worshipped the ground he walked on.
That always surprised me a bit. I thought Americans were more independent minded than that.
BTW. Queen Margrethe is pretty cool and based.

Thanks for that.
The point I was trying to make is that Greenland is the opposite of North America. Rather than Europeans chasing out Indians and taking their land, on Greenland, the indians, Inuit, effectively outpopulated the Europeans and predominate.
We heard what Trump has said he thinks would be good and what the danes say would be bad. Now we must hear from the Greenlanders.
They have an opportunity most folks never have. What do we want?

What makes you think Greenland would become a state?
What makes you think it wouldn't? Sure, citizens of territories don't pay income taxes, but they also have no real representation in FedGov, and aren't as integrated. Why wouldn't they want to become a state?
I doubt Congress would deny them if that's what the populace so chooses. The only obstacle might be the Northwest Ordinance, which specified states could apply for statehood after several days conditions were met, one of which was a population of 60M. Which, obviously, Greenland is short by about 4000. But, once we own it, I'm sure that will jump as companies move into start mining/other industry.
However, I don't know if that population requirement was only for the states in the Ordinance, or if it laid ground rules for any additional future states. I haven't read it that closely.
