What most people are missing is having a personal relationship with Jesus, having accepted Jesus as their savior. What people like Oprah don’t realize is that humans can’t just invent a moral code and corresponding sense of morality. Left to our own devices, we will always end up endlessly defining “morality” downwards, in order to make acceptable whatever our latest carnal desire is. That’s precisely the same race to the bottom that currently afflicts our culture.

True morality can only be dictated by God. Determination of what is moral or immoral, right or wrong, must come from a source outside ourselves. This is precisely why John Adams famously said, “Our Constitution is made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Adams knew that men could not govern themselves unless their passions were restrained via a moral code given by God. Absent that, our Constitutional freedoms become nothing more than license to engage in ever greater debauchery and evil.
