A historic 124-year-old Roman Catholic church in a rural Texas farming town that serves 244 families burned to the ground on Monday. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the State Fire Marshals Office continued to sift through the rubble and investigate what sparked the fire at the Church of the Visitation in Westphalia. Investigators said there were no injuries.
Insurance adjusters estimated that the damages to the building, said to have been the largest all-wood church in the state, could reach $4 million, KWTX reported. The church was built in 1895 and included some 20 stained-glass windows that had been imported from Germany.

That sucks. Hopefully not arson.
This was a very beautiful church. Very sad event.
Of course it was arson.
Unattended vigil candles have been known to start fires.
An Orthodox Church in the metro NYC area was almost completely destroyed by fire right after Pascha last year....candles were the culprit
Why are the agents from BAT there? The last time BAT agents were around a large wooden structure in Texas they burned it down.
Very old wooden church in hot Texas seems to say this was an accident. One would have thought they would have invested in a fire suppression system.
Also, the electrical system on a 124-year-old wooden building could go Zot. Even a tiny Zot would be sufficient to burn the whole building.
Pity. When I was a kid the largest church in town burned to the ground, but in a few years they built a bigger/better replacement.
This is a true local loss.
If this was arson provoked by religious animosity, there is much irony in the name of the town.

Change out the word ALIENS for MUSLIMS and there you have it.
Great point, and very historically astute. I wonder how many here will get it without looking it up.

I doubt there's much religious animosity in a small town of less than 200 people that are probably mostly descendants of the original settlers from Westphalia, Germany.
If it was arson, it was probably done to cover up some sort of embezzling crime.
Based on what evidence?
BTW ... I see what you did there. But we’re talking about 186 residents. I doubt there’s much division among them.
What was the name of the church — Notre Dame?
