How Boris Johnson – and Britain – came to this place
National Post ^ | July 12, 2019 | Conrad Black

... While the Leave victory in the referendum was just 52-48, almost two-thirds of Britain’s parliamentary constituencies voted to leave, so Johnson has in his back pocket the ability to win an election on the issue, even if he has to form an alliance with the original Brexit leader, Nigel Farage, who swept the anachronistic Euro-elections in May. Johnson has astutely pledged to attempt to gain a satisfactory compromise with Brussels on a genuine departure from the EU, but unlike Theresa May, he has made it clear he would rather leave without an arrangement with Brussels, “crash out” as the Project Fear leaders call it, than make a pretend exit as May pursued.

This is precisely the formula that should have been used from the beginning. Brussels should finally realize that the departure of Britain would be like the departure of Texas from the United States, and when Project Fear is exposed as the fraud that it is (and Carney’s role here has been discreditable), other countries will defect from Europe also; it is not really democratic government. Britain is Europe’s second economy after Germany, and by far its most respected nationality, given its immense contribution to Western civilization and heroic role as a pioneer and principal defender of democracy in the world. Where British political institutions have evolved in a generally continuous manner for 950 years and in a thoroughly law-abiding devolution of events since the return of Charles II in 1660, no other large European country has had the same governmental system for more than 75 years and some of them are in rickety condition now. The correlation of forces between a tottering Brussels and a purposefully-led UK never justified the pompous complacency of Brussels, and of the feckless German and French leaders, Merkel and Macron ....

New PM Boris Johnson has some real leverage over the EU, because if Britain leaves (deal or no deal), several other countries will then also have to courage to leave - and the EU definitely does NOT want that.

EU will be backing down and working with Boris, or the EU will disintegrate.

The ball is now in the EU's court.

Reminds me of the lament (from the title, not the substance of the article) from the Left who said “How did we get a President Trump?” and us conservatives had plenty of ready answers for them!

I know, this wasn’t a “lament” but it made me think there are plenty of Leftists in the UK who are thinking “How did this happen?”

Don't know if you've ever heard of him but there's a Brit named Pat Condell who's posted a number of videos on youtube...most of them about Islam,British politics and European politics.

In one of his videos on the EU he said something like "the European Union is very popular among politicians because it's been very *good* to politicians".

All that smoked salmon...all those Mercedes limos...all those villas on the Italian Riviera. It's a good life!

As a guy who's of proud Irish blood I'm astounded that the Irish are unwilling to be ruled from London (perhaps understandably so) but have no problem whatsoever being ruled from Berlin (the *real* "seat" of the EU).

It's all about Ireland...and the world will probably never know what they've been promised by the Stasi's most famous informant,Frau Merkel.

The Irish national identity basically revolves around being anti British. Prior to the EU Ireland was totally dependent on the UK efonomically and even pegged their currency to the pound at par. They are pro EU because Britain is anti it, and view the EU as a bulwark against British influence, they are perversely proud of this reliance on the EU, they simply don’t have the imagination or balls to see themselves as a truly independent nation. Sad.

Even before Brexit comes to an end in October, Boris Johnson can start proposing favorable trade deals to European countries like Italy, Spain, etc., which would encourage them to also leave the EU.

Yup,I understand the hatred. My uncle...my Dad's older brother...despised the British. Although he never said so I'd bet that he was a big supporter of the IRA.

Sigh - what can the UK offer to Italy or Spain?

only 5.2% of Italian exports head to the UK and Italy imports only 2 % of its imports from the UK and it's similar for Spain.

The UK will sign a FTA with the EU soon after Brexit. That's going to happen - it'll be like the Canada-EU trade deal.

You do realize that the Irish aren't "ruled" from Brussels - as was clear during the negotiations when the other EU countries subordinated their needs to stand behind Ireland.

The Irish want a deal but they want it with no border with NI -- and that is what the DUP - the Tory's coalition support - do not want

Of course Ireland isn't ruled by Brussels...I never said that and never would.Ireland is ruled by Berlin...by an East German Stasi informant who is well on her way to achieving what the Germans have wanted to do for 100+ years.

That is...to destroy Europe.

They aren't being ruled from Berlin either -- If they were being "ruled" from Berlin, then the Germans would have forced the Irish to give up their concerns about the border.

Germany runs a trade surplus with the UK, Ireland a deficit. It would have been in Germany's interest for the deal to go through - and that would have happened if Ireland agreed to the border.

My,my,my...how very naive. There are none so blind as those who *will* not see. Ireland is ruled by Berlin in *precisely* the same way that black people (and government employees) in this country are ruled by the Rat Party.

And BTW...you may be a Polish citizen but *I* am an Irish citizen who has family living there to this day. That certainly doesn't make me an expert but I am familiar with the issues at hand.

To expand:

The fiasco that is Brexit has actually increased the favourability of the EU in Spain and Italy

The Italian government has moved from Italexit to “we shall defy and change the EU” — and if they drop their pro-Russia stance, they will be able to tie up with the Visegrad group and do just that.

The EU is flawed, yes, but it has brought prosperity to Spain and even to the UK (compare the British economy pre 1973 with now)

you are funny, central_va. I am not, nor have been a British citizen - I’ve been a British resident and taxpayer for 5 years but not a citizen.

I didn’t lose anything - rather, ever since last year I’ve gained - thanks to the number of companies quietly leaving the UK, the calls for consulting services has boomed.

Brexit is a great thing - I’m all in favour of a hard no-deal Brexit. The only thing that saddens me is that it hasn’t happened yet as the UK hasn’t made up its mind.

There’s none so blind as those like yourself who *will not* see - Ireland has put its own purposes (to have no border with NI) first and Germany has given in to them - as is the way of any club.

If you are familiar with Ireland, then if you have any particular proof beyond rantings, do post how Ireland is “ruled” by Berlin

Rees-Mogg is awesome - with him and Boris in the house, it's like a parody of "Code of the Woosters"!

This is jolly good old bean!

Three cheers for the ol' egg with the Russian first name and the Swedish last name! And Biffy Rees-Mogg too! I hope they rule over jolly old England-Wales for years and years - seriously, this will be great!
