MADRID (AP) Authorities in Gibraltar said they intercepted Thursday an Iranian supertanker believed to be breaching European Union sanctions by carrying a shipment of Tehrans crude oil to war-ravaged Syria.
A senior Spanish official said the operation was requested by the United States. Irans state-run IRNA news agency described the incident as an illegal seizure of an Iranian oil tanker.
Gibraltar port and law enforcement agencies, assisted by Britains Royal Marines, boarded the Grace 1 early Thursday, authorities on the British overseas territory at the tip of Spain said in a statement.
It added that the vessel was believed to be headed to the Baniyas Refinery in Syria, a government-owned facility under the control of Syrian President Bashar Assad and subject to the EUs Syrian Sanctions Regime.

British Marines Seize Oil Tanker Headed For Syria In "Aggressive" Operation
Obama chose not to stop ISIS exporting Syrian oil to Turkey.
Trump chose to stop Syria from lawfully importing oil its citizens need.
IMO, Syria is somewhat caught in the middle. Nothing new there. War with Iran seems inevitable.
The British are still on the side of Al-Qaeda and Company fighting the Syrian regime because they are hooked into the opposition backing Saudi-UAE axis of money.
The ball is back in Iran’s hands now. I wonder what their next play will be?
This particular tanker has two counts against it. It's carrying oil from Iran, which is under embargo by the US and others.. Legal. It's believed to be taking oil to a refinery controlled by the Abbas government, which is under embargo by the EU and others. Legal.
Thanks for this clear and understandable reply:

They called in the British ambassador to protest for starters.
How sweet. First they gave Syria’s own oil to ISIS and now Syria can’t have any oil at all. Limeys sure continue their record for being the best friends of Islamic fundamentalists.
I feel geographically challenged. Why is a tanker from Iran going to Syria in the straits? Is it too big to go through the Suez Canal? If so why ship the oil the extra thousands of miles around Africa instead of using a smaller ship?
I was wondering that myself.
Being sneaky? It would be pretty obvious if its illegal shipping going through the suez.
BOL!
Bingo is one of my favorite words to describe a post or reply!
Let us sell the oil and tanker to get back a tiny portion of the $160 billion Obama-Mess gave away...
I don’t get it. Why don’t we support Assad? He protects Christians
Hopefully President Trump will not be suckered into a war with Iran. That would only help the Dummycrats
Because he kills Israelis!
I am sure it’s been tried but he won’t cut a deal to leave Israel alone for help with staying in power.
Idiot!
