Finally America has its George Smiley, the fictional master spy from the John le Carré novels. Smiley knew the importance of a spy agency being willing to get to the bottom of its own major cock-ups.
Attorney General William Barr has been given power by Donald Trump to declassify classified material. He told CBS that stories offered by the FBI about its investigation of the Trump campaign dont hang together. The same could be said for a more consequential enigma of the 2016 election, concerning the alleged Russian intelligence that lay behind the FBIs intervention in the Hillary Clinton email case.
Remind yourself what happened: James Comey, on his sole initiative, held a press conference to announce that, though Mrs. Clinton had behaved improperly, she did not merit prosecution. Except it wasnt his decision to make: It was the Justice Departments.
We know that Mr. Comey secretly explained his action by invoking still-classified Russian intelligence. In his memoir, he refers to a development unknown to the American public to this day. In fact, we know from news leaks that a Russian intercept of some kind cited a Democratic Party email that referred to an alleged conversation in which Attorney General Loretta Lynch promised to bury the Hillary Clinton investigation.
On the surface, the Russian intelligence indicated political corruption at the Justice Department and yet Mr. Comey rejected this self-advertised significance. He didnt investigate. He didnt tell the Justice Department. He used his possession of the classified intercept as his classified justification for intervening to free Mrs. Clinton from the email matter in time for the Democratic Convention.
The questions about this episode are many. Mr. Barr could start by releasing the classified appendix of the Justice Departments own inspector generals review (whose existence the media uniformly ignores).

Who is this Barr person?
AG Barr, release all three of the Mueller Probe scope memos.
Is the IG a deep stater?
Until there are indictments, arrests, perp walks, trials and convictions this all means nothing to the majority of Americans. The longer this vile plot to rig a Presidential election and prevent a duly elected President from taking office goes unpunished, the greater the erosion of American democracy, confidence in the concept of equal justice and the likelihood the guilty will be rewarded.
The bagpiper has gone silent.
As of yet, some guy that does video ops in the back of a C-30 or playing bagpipes. That and a few good sounding interviews.
Can’t wait to find out if he’s a swamp creature or not.
Release it all. Not just the Mueller crap but all those classified documents at the FBI, CIA, and State.
Do it now.
L
Indict Comey, clapper and brennan
Those rats will spill the beans
Then round up Lynch, Hillary and Obama and all their little helpers.
I don’t care about releases, we all know what happened, we are awaiting justice here.
Everyone in DC is a swamp creature of some sort.
In a month of on the job, Barr took down Mueller, effectively neutering him.
The usual excuse not to release is that they want to protect “sources and methods”.
But here, it seems obvious that they are withholding the information from the public because “it’s really embarrassing”.
Which is a terrible reason to hide what they’ve got.
Excellent post.
People tend to keep on with behavior for which they feel rewarded and stop that for which they feel pain or punishment.
When they see Hillary and Huma at fancy parties, Comey and McNabb on adulatory TV interviews and book tours, and Obama and Michelle lionized with coffee table picture books of their golden era......then why should they respect or follow the law?
He’s been part of the swamp for a long time. He’ll give the American people enough to satisfy them. They will say how great of a man he is. Look at the ruling of the civilian question. His department, who screw that up.
First round of indictments should include at least 20 people. We all know the names, and the crimes.
I’m way beyond believing it will cause a Constitutional crisis, that’s already happened.
The nation’s house needs a swift cleaning, and Patriots are standing by, to insure a positive result. Get it done!
Bad feeling about all this. Many months ago the rumors were “IG report will blow up in Dems’ faces any day now.” Temperatures and windchills were below zero. Now it’s hot out and still no report.
I can’t stand another “Bill & Hillary about to be set up for indictment as shocking evidence is on its way (1990s)” Followed by snoring sounds and then crickets.
Every week has a new flood of disgusting behavior by the Donkey Party.
Where are the FISA warrants that were said to be released? That was months ago? I have little trust in Whoreowitz, he’s an 0bama appointee and his FBI report was pretty much a cover-up.
I guaran-damn-tee you, if the parties were reversed, the Dems would have had scores of republicans locked up already.
There would already be at least 10 poor republican souls getting the Paul Manafort Treatment.
I know that we were greatly handicapped by that front flat tire aka Jeff Sessions. However, I’m beginning to think full out prosecution is not even what the president wants.
Maybe he (wrongly) thinks it would be too dividing for the country. Notice, he has not done anything to Hillary and he probably won’t. The Trumps and the Clintons were very close for decades before 2015. I am still grateful for Trump, but I know no president is likely to give all his supporters what they want.
Could be.
But just "having leverage" does no good. You have to "use the leverage". We all hope that they are using their leverage to dig ever deeper, but we've been draining the swamp for almost 3 years now and no one has been indicted for anything. It's a poor drainage job so far.
