BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) Beto ORourke took a path somewhat less traveled on Friday, meeting with a small group representing a community of slave descendants in South Carolina as he strives to make connections with the black voters who will play a dominant role in next years Southern presidential primaries.
In the community room of a Baptist church in Beaufort, a picturesque historic enclave on the states southern coast, the Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas congressman met with leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, a culture of coastal slave descendants.
Known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Georgia and Florida, the culture is based on farming and fishing and has its own Creole language, history, cooking and crafts, with its communities nestled primarily among a 35-mile cascade of barrier islands. Scholars say separation from the mainland allowed the Gullah to retain much of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as cast-net fishing and basket weaving.

Beto generalizes by race. He throws his entire race under the bus. He does it for political reasons.
He an opportunistic, self loathing, bigot.
Well I pulled weeds for two hours last Saturday. In 92 degree heat and 12% humidity. If slavery was ANYTHING like that, it really did suck.
Slavery has never ended in the United States.
Legally condoned slavery almost but not quite ended with the emancipation proclamation.
Suddenly a White Irish guy knows all about slavery that ended almost 110 years before he was born, Got it.
Slavery has been over for over 150 years, and we have paid out trillions of dollars to help the less privileged to overcome poverty.
Enough!
Man the race baiters are out in force this year.
It’s beyond the pale, and I’m sick of being gamed like this.
If anyone wants to donate to a fund to help Blacks, by all means do it. Leave me out. I wish Blacks well, but enough is enough!
And thus is the dirty little secret of illegal immigration....
Pennies on the dollar. A company store mentality. Living in barracks like slaves. Long hours in the fields. Migrant farm workers represent the modern version of slavery, and like those of the 1600s into the 1800s, demanded of and supported by the Democrat party...
...and Republicans who act like Democrats.
It’s hung around in many guises, seldom opposed by the church as a whole.
Until recently, minors who were forced into prostitution by violent pimps were thrown into the adult prison system when the authorities belatedly got around to arresting the pimps.
When California got around to putting them into the custody of the foster care system and trying to provide rehabilitation we had people on this forum ranting that child prostitution was being legalized.
Because the kids needed punishment along with the johns and the pimps, evidently.

and slavery continues today - blacks enslave blacks in Africa and then there is a very long and continuing story of Arabs keeping Africans as slaves in the Mideast.
ORourke: “White Americans dont know full story of slavery”
What a stupid racially charged statement this idiot spewed!
Can we send this fraud on a one way ticket to Uganda...for a fact finding mission?
Bull shit. I challenge this little rich on his knowledge of the subject. I am tired of these idiots lecturing on subjects they know nothing of.
I don’t think he knows that Africans are the ones who sold their own kind into slavery during tribal disputes, and it’s my understanding that the vast majority of slaves came from one king in particular. He seems to think that the white man ran all over the plains with nets, catching the running tribesmen and women while evading lions and elephants (or just killing hem for fun).
Apparently, that’s what most white liberals think.
The most important fact about slavery is that it was propagated and defended by Democrats.
Around the 1880s slave autobiographies came into literary vogue. That might have been one of them.
