BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) Beto ORourke took a path somewhat less traveled on Friday, meeting with a small group representing a community of slave descendants in South Carolina as he strives to make connections with the black voters who will play a dominant role in next years Southern presidential primaries.
In the community room of a Baptist church in Beaufort, a picturesque historic enclave on the states southern coast, the Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas congressman met with leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, a culture of coastal slave descendants.
Known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Georgia and Florida, the culture is based on farming and fishing and has its own Creole language, history, cooking and crafts, with its communities nestled primarily among a 35-mile cascade of barrier islands. Scholars say separation from the mainland allowed the Gullah to retain much of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as cast-net fishing and basket weaving.

BETO, get out of South Carolina and don't come back!
Whitey O’Rourke has no clue what it’s like to be Mexican, either.
With a lot of white guys dying to free slaves.
I love this.
The other evening, I was reading through my souvenir book from George Washington’s Mount Vernon and in it, was a story of a slave purportedly to have been 100 years old. He apparently told people that he had been the son of a king in an African village that had been attacked by outside forces. They killed his father and many other of the nobility and sold young men like himself into slavery and that’s how he ended up in Virginia.
One can imagine stories like these having taken place in Africa over many centuries and that white peoples’, and certainly that of the United States’, involvement in all of this would have been a blip on the total timescale of wars and conflict and the slave trade in Africa.
... he said between drinks from his sippy-cup...
As long as racial hucksters can make bucks riding the slavery train, we’ll be hearing about “America’s Shame.”
The truth? Yeah let’s go back to how the salves were obtained and who sold them in the first place. By all means let’s talk about African slavery ... which is still going on.
Beto... American Indians, even those who were the sons and daughters of code talkers who were critically important in the Pacific and European theaters, were not permitted to use their own language until 1967. They were forbidden from practicing their religious ceremonies until 1978. They weren’t even considered citizens of the US until 1928. Up until 1918, Californians could still collect a $5 bounty on the scalps of male diggers (Indians) or $25 for the scalps of females.
Go F off with your stupid lecture about slavery which ended entirely in this country in the 1860’s.
Oh, and how about we talk about the unpaid remittances from the Department of the Interior for mineral and resource extraction from trust lands, billions of which are decades overdue (and likely will never be paid because the boxes the records were kept in were left where flood waters could get at them...)
After all, these are contracts between the federal government and individuals and the tribes, actual constitutionally enabled and Senate approved compacts, rather than random reparation bullcrap that has been floating around since before the Navajo could (under federal law) legally use their own language to communicate among themselves.
“Just call me ‘Beteaux O’Roueauxrk’”
Hey Robert Francis!
You don’t speak for me, nor do you know what I know and what I do not!
Go suck on a Soy latte, Pajama Boi!
They’ll never stop. It’s insulting.
They just want black people to stay dumb.
His father was a black sharecropper, you know!
