The 24-year-old victim had called for an Uber at a Manhattan bar and climbed into a waiting black SUV. The California woman had no memory of what happened after she got in, but said she woke up confused and disoriented in a cheap motel room off Route 1 and 9 near Newark Liberty International Airport.
The man who drove her there, who was not an Uber driver, is now facing charges of sexual assault.
The criminal case marked just the latest in a series of similar incidents involving assaults by men posing as ride-share drivers.
It looks like a new kind of operation for predators, said John A. Azzarello of Morristown, the victims attorney. They see these women leaving the bar at closing time and are vulnerable.

(No, a strange is not a friend you haven't met yet)
On the one hand, no one deserves to be raped.
On the other hand, a lot of irresponsible young women really need to look in the mirror if they want to understand source of the problem. Our actions have consequences.
For the record: I’ve used Uber a few times. My phone tells me the make, model and color of the car that’s coming. It tells me the license plate # too. I have never gotten into an Uber without looking at the license plate of the car. Simple process. I can’t get into the wrong car.
Ain’t modern technology great?
Some things don’t change. Back in the 1960’s, my parents were very strict and protective of my sisters, much more than with me, the only son. The girls didn’t like it then, but much later understood. Most women are still more vulnerable in our society than most men. If you’re a young girl, don’t be out that late all alone. Not smart.
Look for the story of the ISIS executioner who worked at LYFT and UBER in the D.C. - Virginia area that was ‘vetted’ by our politicized FBI. Criminal records are hard to come by in war zones. But a cursory search on the internet found his alleged ‘double’ fighting in ISIS.
I remember seeing girls hitch-hiking.
Yes, I’m that old.
About Uber and Lyft. It’s about stupid drunk people getting victimized.
The same caution goes to those who use the App AirNb.
With AirNb, you get a short term rental a room in someone’s home or apartment. For a night, for a week.
This is modeled off the Hostel traditions still found in Europe. Risky business for the renter and the temporary boarder. I wouldn’t do it barring some urgent situation.
I used Lyft for the first time ever when my car broke down as I was traveling in CT last week.
The driver was there in 2 minutes (literally) and the ride to work cost me $10.
I don’t know how they make any profit at those rates. I tip very big though.
I agree. I know a few people who drive for these ride share companies. I would ride with them; but otherwise would not use Uber or Lyft at all.
Reason #1 why I never use Uber or Lyft.
I drive a 2019 HEMI Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I saw a few women in an ER that were almost killed by GHB. It is a dangerous drug used for date rape. A modrrn day ‘mickey’ for us older people.
“Hello, ladies. Hop in. Where ya goin’?”
“We’re going to Hooters where we work.”
“Oh, man. Excuse me while I lock all the doors. It’s for your own safety. Say, have you ever heard of the Story of O?”
“Is it about Cheerios?”
“Is it a Sesame Street episode?”
“No, the Story of O is about a guy doing nasty stuff to a girl, like I’m gonna do to you...”
“Stop the car. Let us out!”
“... starting with a quote from Rime of the Ancient Mariner...”
“Help, help!”
“... and then you’re going to write me an essay.”
“Just shoot us, please!”
Remember “It Happened One Night”?
I think it would probably be a bit safer for (drunk) women to use the Yellow Cab app instead of Uber or Lyft.
