Update by Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office May 10, 2019

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is releasing additional information in regards to the Officer Involved Shooting that occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on May 7, 2019. To present date, the investigation has revealed that Santa Barbara Police Department officers were in the process of serving a high-risk search and arrest warrant at an apartment on Camino De Vida when the wanted subject, 32-year-old Francisco Anthony Alcaraz Jr., shot at them from the second story stairwell of his apartment and then from an upstairs rear bedroom window.

Alcaraz was a documented gang member from the Santa Barbara area and was wanted for attempted murder due to his involvement in a suspected gang-related shooting. Alcaraz resided in Lompoc, but was known to frequent the Camino De Vida apartment, the home of his wife and children. The warrant, a planned SWAT operation, was served at a time when Alcaraz was determined to be alone inside the apartment.

After examining the evidence collected, Sheriff’s detectives determined that Alcaraz was in possession of a 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine and shot a total of six rounds at officers in two separate exchanges of gunfire. One of the rounds struck an officer in the pant leg, but fortunately did not cause injury. Another round struck a SWAT vehicle where officers were taking cover.

In both instances where the suspect shot at officers, they returned fire. Five Santa Barbara Police Officers fired a total of 58 rounds at the suspect. An autopsy revealed that the suspect was struck four times and that he died as a result of his injuries. Preliminary indications are that none of the gunshot wounds were self-inflicted.

“58 rounds at the suspect. An autopsy revealed that the suspect was struck four times”

Well, dang, I understand adrenaline running, but that is some bad shooting.

I would guess after the fireworks started some of those rounds were for cover so teams could get closer and or move in to setup on the suspect.

Not if your 150 - 200+ yards behind them. I can average 2 well aimed sots evert 5 seconds. My guess is they will hide and call for more targets, oops backup. 3 man teams would own swat teams easily. JMHO

Covering fire. Maybe shooting through concealment at an unseen target. A lot of rounds probably hit siding, insulation and drywall.

You will lose a gunfight with a swat team.

If you are dumb enough to get cornered in an apartment.

“...some of those rounds were for cover so teams could get closer and or move in...”

You get it. Many here do not understand the concepts of suppressive fire. The way I would word it, “The bad guy fired six rounds that caused no injuries to the police while they fired back, moved in on him, and made him good and dead.” This is winning one for the good guys people. I salute the SWAT Team.

Great laughs here about cops spraying and praying.

Had a fugitive on the run here on the Big island. Cops spotted him, three cops unloaded 25+ shots at him in a "Sclade" and he got away.

They spotted him again a few days later, lit him up on foot this time and he got away again. Cops were a laughingstock. Could not hit an unarmed man who was not returning fire.

After he turned himself in, I wondered if one of the charges would be not standing still while they shot at him.

Hahahaha! Well said! Range jockey “experts” forget about the 2 way aspect you describe. Additionally 58 rounds from 5 SWAT officers is not a lot of ammo per person considering 1) person had high ground from 2nd floor and 2) even after being struck once, twice, three, four times he apparently wasn’t going anywhere without dying.

WTF would you assault someone with a rifle? Wouldn’t the smart thing to do is shoot them?

Just imagine how many shorts would have been fired if they weren’t the ‘superb, highly trained marksmen’ of S.W.A.T.!
