During an Iowa town hall last week, “Beto” O’Rourke, who had pledged to raise the level of national discourse, depicted President Donald Trump’s rhetoric as right out of Nazi Germany.
Trump “describes immigrants as ‘rapists’ and ‘criminals'” and as “‘animals’ and ‘an infestation,'” said Beto.
“Now, I might expect someone to describe another human being as ‘an infestation’ in the Third Reich. I would not expect it in the United States of America.” The crowd lustily cheered the analogy.
By week’s end, Beto’s Third Reich comparison had been matched in nastiness by Bernie Sanders’ description of the president to the cheering activists of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network:
“It gives me no pleasure to say this but today we have a president who is a racist, sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe and a religious bigot.”
Sanders managed to appeal to almost all elements of the Democrats’ coalition by accusing Trump of hating blacks, women, gays, foreigners and Muslims.
Sanders’ outline of Trump calls to mind Hillary Clinton’s now-famous attack on the white working-class folks who would give Trump his victory:
“(Y)ou could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables … racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it … he has lifted them up.”
Where Hillary’s slander of the Donald’s MAGA constituents as a thoroughly rotten crowd of Americans came two months before the 2016 election, Bernie’s assault on Trump’s character comes fully 20 months before the 2020 election.

The Nazis were, first and foremost, Socialists, and Donald Trump is not. The Nazis also claimed to be “nationalists”, but that was not their main emphasis, as they regarded themselves to be the nucleus of a worldwide empire, the Reich that would stand for a thousand years.
The Democrats have been quick to conflate the “nationalism” of the Nazis with the nationalist policies of Donald Trump, but clearly there are two very different interpretations of the meaning of “nationalism”. As postulated by Adolf Hitler, “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer” was essentially a pledge of allegiance to a totalitarian dictator, with a modest nod to “Vaterland”.
The nationalism of Donald Trump is encapsulated in “Make America Great Again”, a reference to the historical importance of the experiment that was and is the United States of America has for the world as a whole. The USA is a land of high social mobility and few forbidding class distinctions, perhaps unique in the world, and it got that way by embracing a great range of personal freedom, a right not enjoyed by the vast majority of the inhabitants of earth.
Democrats need a new line. The Hitler one is getting old.

Hitler was all about working class rights for German citizens antiimmigration and making Germany great again after things were so bad from WW1. And blaming it on Jews etc. or eliminating the competition also being antigay antidisabled and being totolotarian. I lol be honest. If Trump is all of those, then we need more of them in government. He's a racist that has the record of the lowest unemployment for minorities. He's a homophobe that stands up for gays being treated with dignity, a xenophobic (good) and a religious bigot that relocated out embassy to Jerusalem and is enforcing and supporting laws giving more religious freedom. Meanwhile what Beto, but and Irish clod posing as a Mexican who is a communist who joyously lies about saying how much he hates. Viva Trump!
