I no longer follow MLB or the NFL, but I am aware that John Henry is a worm.

The official name change of Yawkey Way back to Jersey Street is supposedly part of the ceremony coming up. This action largely the result of initiatives of John Henry, the filthy rich owner of the Red Sox and Boston Globe who to my knowledge has no charitable Institutions named after him.

Meanwhile, I am intimately familiar with a couple of multi million Dollar facilities which were built using Yawkey money in order to serve the poorest persons of the Metro region.

Meanwhile, Henry has continued to thrive financially by polluting the previously unadorned Fenway Park with advertising saturating the once prior beautiful green walls that Yawkey refused to provide space for.

During my youth, Fenway Park was an oasis away from the advertising.

The days of Duke Snyder, Gil Hodges, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson, and Pee Wee Reese are over. That is when men played baseball for the love of the game and not for the money. Guess you figured out I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. I won’t watch any of these high paid, egotistical, primadonnas. Baseball or football.

And you didn't go over to the Mets with everyone else?

Too bad, we have a great team this year. Best announcers in the league too.

I have a copy of Peter Golenbock’s book about the Brooklyn Dodgers (BUMS), which was written in about 1984. Among the more interesting and enjoyable parts of the book (which had many), were the discussions and memories of the ballpark itself (Ebbets Field) and the surrounding neighbourhood and how ones like Snider, Robinson, Reese, and others were very well known and friendly with people there.

Would not surprise me that there were those good numbers of people who grew up in that area with the team during those years up to the late 1950s who after reading parts of the book that focused on those things (as opposed to the great moments in the team’s history) were that good deal teary eyed.

The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn is the book to read on the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1950s.

I remember as a kid going to Ebbets field for a Dodger game against my team the NY Giants. It was my first and only time in the bandbox. I went to many games in the Polo Grounds and sat in the fifty cent bleacher seats.

The players were just members of the community. They were in the grocery stores, barber shops, etc. Very approachable. My idol, Willie Mays, used to play stick ball with the kids in the streets.

Many of the players in the late 1940s and early 50s were veterans who saw action in WWII. They were heroes long before they went on to the baseball field.

I could have written exactly the same thing, except I never sat in the bleachers at the Polo Grounds. I saw my first game at the Polo Grounds in 1951 and my first World Series game in 1954. I was sitting in the left field stands when Mays made THE Catch.

The one game I saw at Ebbits Field might have been Preacher Roe's last game. They brought him on in relief with the bases loaded and Hank Thompson hit a grand slam off him.

We share 1951 as our first visit to the Polo Grounds. As an 9 year old, I came with my father via subway from Jersey City. I can still remember vividly my first impression of seeing the field as we descended the steps to reach our seats. The bright green grass, the sounds, the moment. It was like entering a great cathedral. Although we had no TV in 1951, I used to go to the firehouse to watch games on TV. Of course, it was black and white. To see the Polo Grounds in reality was a magical experience.

Hank Thompson, Alvin Dark, Wes Westrum, Monte Irvin, Willie, Don Mueller, Sal Maglie, Whitey Lockman, etc. I still remember the players of the 1951 and 1954 teams. Great players with high skill levels. They could compete today.

The Yawkey Way thing has to do with the fact that Yawkey was a pretty open racist. AND...Boston is one of the most racist cities in the US.

Remember folks, Boston is NOT Cambridge or Wellesley or Brookline. There are some hardcore “whitey areas” in Boston proper—and Yawkey knew where his bread was buttered.

Now its all a sewer.

The commuter railroad station nearby got changed to Fenway from Yawkey today as SJWs felt name of Yawkey was racist...and since the street is no longer named Yawkey Way, the railroad station is now called Landsdowne.

(What was Yawkey Way is where main ticket office and main gate are— now back to Jersey St...though the Earl of Jersey owned slaves.Landsdowne St, behind the Green Monster is also known as Ted Williams Way.)

A giant MGM Casino logo is up on the Green Monster. Huge ad.Not to be confused with the closer Encore, formerly Wynn, casino.

IIRC, Manfred signed a mega-deal with the MGM "family" of casinos recently. Part of the deal was that starting lineups of each game must be submitted to MLB HQ between 15 and 30 minutes prior to start, so the MGM has time to adjust the betting odds at their sports books.

And for those that think the "Green Monster" has always been so pristine of advertising, check out this photo from the 1946 World Series:
