Deadly germs, Lost cures: A Mysterious Infection Spanning the Globe in (snip) Secrecy
The New York Times ^ | 6 April 2019 | Matt Richtel and Adrew Jacobs

Posted on 04/06/2019 9:04:49 AM PDT by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

Last May, a elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery. A blood test revealed he was infected with a newly discovered germ. Doctors isolated him in ICU. Over the last five years, it has hit a neonatal unit in Venezuela, swept through a hospital in Spain, forced a British medical center to shut down its ICU, and taken root in India, Pakistan and South Africa.

Recently C. auris reached New York, NJ and Illinois, leading the federal CDC and Prevention to add it to a list of germs deemed “urgent threats.” The man at Mount Sinai died after 90 days in the hospital, but C. auris did not. Tests showed it was everywhere in his room... so invasive that the hospital needed special cleaning equipment and had to rip out some of the ceiling and floor tiles to eradicate it.

“Everything was positive — the walls, the bed, the doors, the curtains, the phones, the sink, the whiteboard, the poles, the pump,” said Dr. Scott Lorin, “The mattress, the bed rails, the canister holes, the window shades, the ceiling, everything in the room was positive.”

In 2015, Dr. Johanna Rhodes, an infectious disease expert at Imperial College London, got a panicked call from the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. C. auris had taken root there, and the hospital couldn’t clear it.

Under her direction, hospital workers used a special device to spray aerosolized hydrogen peroxide around a room used for a patient with C. auris. They left the device going for a week. Then they put a “settle plate” in the middle of the room with a gel at the bottom that would serve as a place for any surviving microbes to grow, Dr. Rhodes said.

Only one organism grew back. C. auris.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Something else that people on both sides are wont to overlook is that artificial antibiotic drugs tend to promote an adaptive response, resulting in the so-called Super-Bugs.

There are natural antibiotic herbs and spices that do not tend to promote such an adaptive response, yet retain their efficacy.

The problem is that they cannot be patented, and do not produce enormous profits for pharmaceutical companies, so the FDA actively denounces them in favor of patentable products. Follow the money - always.

I’m sure that they all wore protective clothing which was then burned but yes. Hospitals are full of super bugs.

Treating a run-of-the-mill candidemia was a nightmare. This sounds even more ghastly.

I also use Brettanomyces as I like brewing Lambic and Gueuze.

I’ve had a love affair with Belgian Beer for many years, especially the Saisons.. Farmhouse Ales.

My favorite is Cantillon Brewery in Brussels. Been there several times...

The word “germ” is used to define tiny organisms that can cause disease, which could certainly describe this fungus, but I don’t think medical professionals use the term.

Although it is classified as a fungus C. auris, it may be something completely different. The organism might have been incorrectly placed in a classification box to which it does not belong.

The article describes attempts to remove known microorganisms while making it obvious that what is called C. auris is in fact not a conventionally classified organism.

Recently, some have put forward the concept of a third kingdom. That is there the animal, the plant and the fungal kingdoms. The fact is, C. auris is not understood well enough to classify it much less destroy it

I read about some in scientists considering the establishment of the new kingdom of Fungi here on Free Republic. Fungi are not really plants in the usual respects.

The other thoughts are mostly my own extrapolations.
