Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” host Chris Matthews offered his take on the Democratic Party’s drift to the far-left, which he warned could have an impact on the 2020 presidential election.
Matthews reminded voters of the 1972 presidential election between incumbent President Richard Nixon and then-Democratic presidential nominee Sen. George McGovern (D-SD). Nixon won in a landslide, taking 49 states and 60% of the popular vote.
He suggested such a scenario could be possible in 2020 if Democrats nominated a far-left candidate to go up against President Donald Trump in 2020.

“What’s hard is to identify a leading candidate that is resisting the move to the left,” Matthews continued. “Very hard because all seem determined to hold their own among those young, strongly progressive, often minority voters expected to make up the voting base in the early states. I have a strong memory of how this pattern of Democratic Party behavior worked out the last time the party went hard to the left. It was 1972. George McGovern was the chosen nominee. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The convention was giddy with excitement even if not that well organized. I was there watching the Massachusetts delegation actually dancing in a circle. They were so happy. The Democrats lost 49 states that year to Richard Nixon who not only carried the Electoral College, losing only Massachusetts and D.C. but 60 percent of the popular vote.”

Chrissy is right on this—Go too Far left and Trump will look moderate and win a landslide and give the House to the GOP.
They're all far left candidates. The only difference is how well they hide it.
Sanders is the front runner for the Dems. I almost believe McGovern would be more popular.

He’s right, but it appears they’ve managed to land a fatal head shot on Joe Biden. So the field will be nothing BUT Marxist whackos.

Trump won’t get 49 states, but he will get the biggest re-election margin since Reagan... and watching the Colorado EC voters have to vote for him even though the state likely won’t vote for him will be fun to watch... as the same leftist morons that pushed for the change in Colorado, will overnight be filing federal court challenges to the law to void it after its clear Trump won both the EC and the Popular vote.
The days of a Nixon/Reagan-style landslide are, unfortunately, ancient history. Most of the so-called “blue states” have moved so far left that it’s essentially impossible for the GOP candidate to peel them off no matter who the Dems run.. They can run the kookiest left-wing nut they can dig up in 2020, and they’re still winning CA, OR, WA, NY, MA, CT, MD, etc.
The DEMs from prior to 1988 would be immensely jealous of the voter fraud machine in place the past couple of decades.
What gives me pause is that our population of people who enthusiastically WANT socialism is infinitely larger now than in ‘72.
Chrissy better watch out or he will get doxxed by the snowflakes.
At this point, Hillary would be the moderate ‘rat candidate.
