(CNN)Lori Lightfoot has been elected the next mayor of Chicago, according to the Associated Press, becoming the first African-American woman picked to lead the country's third-most populous city.
Lightfoot faced a historic runoff Tuesday against Toni Preckwinkle, who is also an African-American woman. "This may not be the outcome we wanted but while I may be disappointed, I'm not disheartened," Preckwinkle told supporters after she called Lightfoot to congratulate her. Mayor Rahm Emanuel was not in the race, as he was not seeking a third term. Lightfoot, 56, a former assistant US attorney, describes herself as "an out and proud black lesbian." When she is sworn in, she will be the first mayor in the Windy City who identifies as a lesbian.
In the wake of the Laquan McDonald scandal -- in which a white police officer, Jason Van Dyke, shot the black teenager 16 times as he walked away from police -- Lightfoot was appointed by Emanuel to head the newly created police accountability task force.
Preckwinkle, 72, is a political insider who heads the Cook County Board and chairs the Cook County Democratic Party. She made education and a $15 minimum wage focal points of her campaign. A Chicago Tribune report in January claimed that Preckwinkle hired the son of a powerful old-school alderman, Ed Burke, to a $100,000 a year job with the county. Burke was recently charged with attempted extortion after the FBI raided his offices in January. In February's general election which had 14 candidates, Lightfoot and Preckwinkle were the top two vote-getters, which led to Tuesday's runoff.

I am so glad I no longer have to commute to Chicago for work anymore. No f'n way I want to be anywhere near that shithole once Lightfoot is sworn in.
The Chicago cops are already saying that crime rates are gonna go WAY up because they're completely de-motivated to arrest ANYONE now.

I foresee a time not far off when the sane parts of states like NY, IL and CA will “wall off” their big cities, or better still force them to be city-states, so that the rest of each state can function normally.

And why should they? Kim Foxx isn’t the worst problem facing the CPD. The judges are even worse. Hell, one of them let a known gang banger out on a ridiculously low bail who then went on to murder a cop.

It’s getting to the point that normal people don’t even bother with running for office anymore leaving the choices between people like this.
I don’t think we’re going to have to wait until Summer .... the first 70+ degree weekend is going to see a HUGE spike in murders .... and not a single one of them will ever get solved.

Like Dusty Springfield belted out, “Wishing, and hoping, and praying” ain’t going to do it. This Lightfoot lady has been completely steeped in social and economic liberalism for years. She’ll speak out against corruption but will implement the policies that allow it to thrive. She is another “successful” woman who is setting the example of lesbianism. This is not a good day for Chicago or America.

That’s my follow up statement. Every democrat city has their own supporters living in hell. Horrible school systems. Drugs. Crime. Etc. They care nothing for human life.

Sadly I think you’re right. The west side is a frigging powder keg. The Morlocks are now swarming the cops when they try to make arrests. The next step will be open warfare.

You are probably right. I spent a lot of time in Chicago over the years, and I am sad for what has happened to the city. Yes, downtown is nice, there are a ton of good restaurants, and people from the urban East coast are impressed, but the heart of the city - the neighborhoods, are in serious decline and the whole state is a financial mess. If I walked tonight in any of the old neighborhoods that were so familiar to me, there’s a disturbing percentage chance I’d wind up shot or dead. Seriously. I’m glad I don’t live there now, but I will still pray that things work out - somehow.
