The first African-American female mayor in Chicago history will be Lori Lightfoot
CNN ^ | Mar. 2, 2019

(CNN)Lori Lightfoot has been elected the next mayor of Chicago, according to the Associated Press, becoming the first African-American woman picked to lead the country's third-most populous city.

Lightfoot faced a historic runoff Tuesday against Toni Preckwinkle, who is also an African-American woman. "This may not be the outcome we wanted but while I may be disappointed, I'm not disheartened," Preckwinkle told supporters after she called Lightfoot to congratulate her. Mayor Rahm Emanuel was not in the race, as he was not seeking a third term. Lightfoot, 56, a former assistant US attorney, describes herself as "an out and proud black lesbian." When she is sworn in, she will be the first mayor in the Windy City who identifies as a lesbian.

In the wake of the Laquan McDonald scandal -- in which a white police officer, Jason Van Dyke, shot the black teenager 16 times as he walked away from police -- Lightfoot was appointed by Emanuel to head the newly created police accountability task force.

Preckwinkle, 72, is a political insider who heads the Cook County Board and chairs the Cook County Democratic Party. She made education and a $15 minimum wage focal points of her campaign. A Chicago Tribune report in January claimed that Preckwinkle hired the son of a powerful old-school alderman, Ed Burke, to a $100,000 a year job with the county. Burke was recently charged with attempted extortion after the FBI raided his offices in January. In February's general election which had 14 candidates, Lightfoot and Preckwinkle were the top two vote-getters, which led to Tuesday's runoff.

Look at the effect on the kids though. “If you are gay you too can be a mayor someday”.

Lightfoot seems to be a fairly common black surname. Some major slaveholders apparently had the name, which is English in origin and not Native American as I was inclined to think.

Anyway, I voted against Pop Tax witch who is Chair of the democrat party and a massive c word. Her ads practically accused Lightfoot of being a Republican. LOL.

I do think that despite “progressives” being in love with her than Lightfoot is objectively less leftist than Dickwankle who has proven her communist bonafides as Board President with her regressive sin tax aimed at low-income people.

The most Republican ward (41) was Lightfoot’s best. Pretty much everyone in the city voted for her over Pop Tax witch, no one more heavily than White people of all areas and income levels. Dickwink only cracked 40% in TWO wards.

My ward (26) was actually one of dickwankle’s best (a third of the vote), because the local alderman and his machine supported her.

Despite all the “no difference” comments I live here and I’m pretty pleased. I don’t think Dykefoot will be any worse than Rahm. I only wish the witch wasn’t still County Board President. We need a fellow Black to run against her next time, Whitey Fioretti lost by 20 points. Those of us that live here need to make choices from the available array of diseases and to us “infected” people there are differences that are at least a little meaningful. I’d have voted for Stalin himself over Dickwangle.

In other news, the Berner psychopath public bank/ “basic income” candidate for Treasurer lost by 20 points. Ironically he carried the rich wards downtown and lost the poorest Blackest wards where you’d figure people would love the idea of getting free money (his opponent, the winner, is Black).

Alderman Deb Mell is behind by 64 votes (to an AOC whackjob “progressive of color”). I am glad I don’t live in that ward cause damn what a choice!

I heard something about a charter school supporter leading an incumbent but I don’t remember which ward or know how it turned out.

That's why I compared it to Baltimore. Even with the chaos and the decline in safety, it still has a lot going for it. Even that couldn't save it from a nutty Mayor who thought looting and burning down huge swaths of the city was "letting off steam".

The problem approaches impossible when too much of the middle class leaves. Those who votes irresponsibly, for their freebies, then control the outcome.

I saw there was 30% turnout. Normal voters saw no one to vote for.

... “Chicago elects first black, openly gay, female mayor.” Millennials think those details are what’s important.

Yes, because they have been hammered with those "important" details all their lives. No one teaches common sense or logic anymore...especially their parents, who have spent their whole lives trying to be the "cool" and enlightened parents. And have used their kids as guinea pigs for the latest child-rearing fad.
