Parliament Grabs Control of Brexit From a Wounded Theresa May
The New York Times ^ | March 25, 2019 | Stephen Castle

LONDON — Britain’s Parliament grabbed control Monday of the government’s efforts to leave the European Union, challenging the country’s political traditions and inflicting on Prime Minister Theresa May a rebuke not suffered by any recent predecessor.

By stepping into the process known as Brexit and trying to define an alternative path, lawmakers could create a constitutional showdown in Britain, where the government normally controls the agenda in Parliament, especially on its most pressing issues.

Parliament passed an amendment giving itself the power to vote on alternatives to the government’s Brexit plan. Its attempt to take control of the process came as Mrs. May prepared for a last-ditch effort to persuade lawmakers to support her withdrawal plan, which has already been rejected twice by huge margins.

....

Mrs. May’s grip on power is ebbing, with members of her cabinet openly discussing contradictory Brexit policies, rumors swirling of a plot to replace her and several of her Conservative Party lawmakers calling on her to name a date for her departure from power. She has already said she will not lead the party into the next general election scheduled for 2022.

The latest maneuvers come at the start of a week that was supposed to see Britain leaving the European Union, something that Mrs. May had promised more than 100 times would happen on March 29. Instead, Britain will remain at least until April 12, though what happens thereafter is anyone’s guess at the moment.

I’ve read all of that and then some. What I wrote was my opinion, you don’t have to agree!

and Kasierina Victoria was Queen Victoria’s oldest daughter.

Bismarck would have avoided the war, he was maneuvered out by Wilhelm. Wilhelm was at best immature & reckless surrounded by sycophants. He was Victoria’s favorite grandchild.

“If Russia & GB had stayed out of it, it would have been another Balkan shoot’em up. No WWI, no communism, no Nazism, no WWII, world would have been a better place.’”

Communism would have happened anyway - the czars and Russian nobility were mostly idiots that grossly mistreated their people and long before 1914 they were having severe internal problems. See what happened to the Russian Second Pacific Squadron on their way to the Battle of Tsushima.

Some historians have posited that all WW1 did in this respect was bring the inevitable revolution forward a bit, and not by much.

I wholeheartedly agree and it is a shame my countrymen (Canada) were sucked into THAT war. Part of the reason to this day I have little trust for Serbia, that made out like a bandit after WWI, tripling the size of its empire. Wilson lied and Americans died. Britain’s motivations were indeed far from pure.

Interesting take. Keep in mind the Germans transported Lenin back to Russia to get Russia out of the war, so they did indeed at least fast tracked Bolshevism. One could argue those pushing democratic socialism may have won out over the Bolshevists.

Quite possibly, yes. The revolution was inevitable, the only question is what form of Communism/socialism/leftism would result.

“It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your G0d for a few pieces of money... In the name of God, go!”

“They” will keep kicking the can down the road, then hold a re-vote and keep counting until they get the results they want.

You don’t think “they” will allow for a fair process, do you?

Just for anyone wondering...

The UK Conservative party is about equivalent to the US Democrat party.

UK Labour is pretty close to Ocasio-Cortes and Bernie.

UK Social Dems are even more left.

Green is pretty much Green.

BNP is the closest to the Repubs, although Britain has long failed on many of the US Conservative positions. So BNP has maybe half (or less) of the same positions, the rest aren’t really even issues in the UK.

There is no one "they" -- the Leavers and Remainers have no united voices

The EU's voice right now is "leave - go. IF it needs to be hard brexit, go"

The number only even approaches 1 million if you include the dead due to spanish flue 1919.

Your numbers are off

And, the German Empire of WWI did not aim or try to destroy the British

Correct

WWI is a mix of issues, none of which was "destroy perfidious Albion"

The German plan was to knock out France, push Russia back to the Brest line and prop up Austro-Hungary

Reily's answer also adds information

Russia had to get involved in the Balkans as they had been doing that since the mid 1800s, freeing Orthodox states from the Turks - they felt it was their national goal to reconquer constantinople and that the Austrians stood in their way

The Brits could have sat it out - their empire would have lasted longer

communism was not inevitable in Russia - it was aided by the German Empire who transported Lenin to Russia from switzerland

communism in post-imperial germany - now that was more likely

if that is the case, then perhaps it is somewhat of an achievement that May got as far as she did with Article 50...(???)
