A new bill in California seeks to intrude on one of the most sacred relationshipsthat between clergy and penitent in formal confession. Currently, clergy members are already mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect, but sins confessed specifically in confession are exempt under current law from mandatory reporting.
Bill 360, introduced by Democrat state Sen. Jerry Hill, would delete that exception for a penitential communication, thereby requiring clergy to make a mandated report even if they acquired the knowledge or reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect during a penitential communication. This is an egregious overreach of secular authority, stepping into sacred religious rites, and will not protect children or stem the tide of child abuse.

I we as citizens required to report when deep state officials openly admit to crimes in public ?
California is the communists capital of America. This damn State is so far left that it beginning to look like Mexico’s annex.
So... um...
Catholic priests are going to give up illegal aliens who are going to there parishes? Is that what California hopes to achieve? Or is California going to dismiss those confessions and only consider other types of confessions.
Seems to me California will pick and choose the confessions that they are willing to prosecute. But I will say this - not everybody confesses fully to their priest. My father once told me there are some things you just take to the grave ... And from what I have observed over the years there are plenty of people that take a lot of stuff to the grave... either that or they ask for the Lord’s forgiveness on their own... and they don’t need a crowd to do that.
It is asking the Lords forgiveness a Christian fundamental that secular politicians and legislators just can’t seem to grasp?
Why would they need biblical permission for enacting the sacraments (e.g. Baptism, Reconciliation, The Sacrifice of the Eucharist)? They were doing those things for years before the Gospels were written down.
But anyway - here you go:
"If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld."
John 20:21-23:
Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.
Not only this. You said: “Actual Christians...”. So, Catholics are not Christians in your world view? I tend to disagree. Study history, that’s why I converted back in the 80s.
Also, you mentioned one can go straight to the Father for forgiveness. True. But Jesus gave that power to the ones He put in charge of the church also.
Just how do they enforce this?
More to the point, as someone dealing with the same thing said in Australia, This is a foreign states law overriding our civil law, which is there to protect children, it shouldnt have any say at all.
I agree. I work as a chaplain. We promise confidentiality.
Then my boss comes along and starts citing the exemptions to the confidentially clause - He is probably worried about a lawsuit.
But I tell folks there are many things I will take to the grave.
Ben Franklin liked to say "Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead!"
And at the same time, they pass a bill making pedophilia a “sexual orientation”. Go figure.
Like lawyer/doctor as well.
Well, no, lawyer/doctor isn’t being imposed by a foreign state.
Thank you for sharing your irrelevant feelings.
True.
Unfortunately, Rome demonstrated it cannot police itself.
This development will follow here and around the world, I expect.
Greek...
"If you forgive anyone his sins, they are already forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is already withheld."
It was the proclamation that the meaning of Christ's death is that sins were forgiven to those who received His gift, or not forgiven to those who do not.
It was not a sacrament that bestowed forgiveness or withheld forgiveness.
What I was referring to was priest/confessor relationship; same as lawyer/doctor.
As soon as such a law is passed such confessions will cease. Authorities will accuse priests of lying about that because they know that there are x number of such confessions per 10000 people. The corrective new law to that will be insistence that all confessionals be wired.
Unless you are making a face to face confession, how does a priest know who you are? Our church gives the option of both a confession behind a screen or face to face. Sometimes people dont always go to the same church for confession.
><
You don’t know how Communists and NAZI’s do things.
A suspect would go to confession and the Gestapo would wait for the suspect to leave and immediately nab the Priest and interrogate him. That’s only one example.
I agree.
so they’re trying to pass a bill that already exists?
