HOLLYWOOD, CAAfter a 1971 Playboy interview with John Wayne that was deemed offensive surfaced online, liberal activists took to the streets to boycott the actor, vowing that Wayne will never work in Hollywood again.

John Wayne is one of my favorites......and I only have a few.

I think that’s because the public knew NOTHING about the private lives of celebrities. We could admire their onscreen personas as examples to follow and not realize those were just actors acting. Today, with social media, we can see their ragged toenails and smell their bad breath.
Give me the good old days when I could admire Errol Flynn’s screen performance and know nothing about his personal life.
I read recently that Gracie Allan never once let her real personality show while in the public. She was always “on” so as not to spoil the public’s image. I’ll bet if she were alive today her twitter feed would be hugely popular as we would never see her politics and it would be pure entertainment.
That’s bold talk for a one eyed fat man...
I sometimes see Dirty Harry on TV. That could never be made today. Matter of fact, Gunsmoke could never be made today with all the violence against women that takes place in many episodes.
“The Green Beret’s” was the worst movie John Wayne was ever in and possibly in the top ten worst movies of all time.
I believe his son Michael directed it proving once again that nepotism is the kiss of death every time.
It wasn’t all directing though as the writing and plotline were pretty stinky as well.
John Wayne laughs at you snowflakes....
Gunsmoke shaped my vision of self-governance. Just the level of control needed to provide Justice AND Freedom.
What better punishment?
In Clockwork Orange, the rapist was brain washed, unsuccessfully though, with images of violence. His eyes lids were taped open to force him to watch.

John Wayne was offered the role played by Gary Cooper and refused because he hated the script and considered it un-American. He felt that no American town would run from doing what was right.
My favorite scene in the Green Berets was when they were evacuating the overrun camp and called in a Puff to saturate the camp with Gatling gun fire. I laugh every time.

They had their scandals back then, but yes, they weren’t broadcasted 24/7/365 for all to see. Spencer Tracy (married) and Kate Hepburn come to mind... and Errol Flynn had a few “young” women problems, as well as other scandals. These were actually fairly well known at the time.
RE Wayne:
He was great in “The Quiet Man” - One of the best movies ever and one of my personal favorites.
“The Green Berets” had its cheesy moments (I never saw pine trees in Vietnam) but John Wayne was believable as an Army colonel & had played that role more than once.
But the Duke as a German sea captain or as Genghis Khan was waaaay out of character. He was never good at foreign accents and the makeup job to give him Mongol eyes royally sucked.
