Kissing statue vandalized with '#MeToo' hours after passing of veteran known as 'kissing sailor'

SARASOTA, Fla. — The iconic kissing statue, known as the "Unconditional Surrender" statue, in Sarasota was vandalized less than 24 hours after the passing of the World War II veteran who was identified as the "kissing sailor" in the famous photo that inspired the sculpture.

The 26-foot tall statue is located on the Sarasota Bayfront near Marina Jack.

Sarasota Police Department says at approximately 12:53 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the intersection of North Gulfstream Avenue and Bayfront Drive for a report of an unknown person spray painting the statue.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the words "#MeToo" spray painted along the left leg of the kissing nurse. Police couldn't find any spray paint bottles in the area and no other objects were found to be defaced or vandalized.

How sad. But predictable. In fact, I just predicted this yesterday.

There’s a statue of that kiss in the McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach, Florida. The statue stands about 25 feet high and weighs tons. We were just there a couple of days ago.

Really? When the #MeToo activists get as bold as the anti-Confederacy activists, that statue will be coming down.

Re: Post 17...

“As first dates go, Rita Petry thought this one was pretty great: a beautiful summer afternoon in the city, a matinee at Radio City Music Hall, drinks after, followed by a passionate, soon-to-be-iconic kiss.

Well, maybe not the kiss: Her handsome young suitor, it turns out, planted that on another woman.

Such is the incredible story behind one of the most romantic and enduring photos of the 20th century — and one of our most compelling mysteries.

Since Aug. 14, 1945, the identities of the smooching sailor and the nurse...”

What horrible existence it must be for a Leftist.

The iconic image of the couple reminds us of duty, service and sacrifice. A joyful and victorious end to a long war. We fought evil, defeating tyranny from Germany and Japan. The image demonstrates the transition of our sons and daughters to civilian life, and optimism of what this great country could achieve. Pride in our mission, how America pulled together, our values, and celebrating who we are as a Nation...

But somehow the twisted mind of a Leftist sees something worthy of vandalism and disgust.

"...acetone on a rag..."

That would likely only render it a misdemeanor.
Best to ensure the spraypaint and subsequent clean-up did not cause expensive structual damage that might need further investigation.
It would be a shame if the criminals were ultimately charged with a felony. :-)

The ‘movement’ is a lot more amusing if you pronounce ‘#’ as ‘pound’.

There’s the same statue in San Diego, wonder if it’s guarded now?
