By now you have all seen the images and read about the controversy surrounding the encounter at a rally in Washington, D.C. involving some high school students and a Native American – Nathan Phillips.
Nathan is a tribal elder and has often been put forth as a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran.
We have filed for his military records but the point of this article is that there are stories all over the place about what Phillips’ status is and to do this right takes time.
But in the media’s rush to get a story out — what “facts” rise to the surface and what did Phillips actually say about his military service?
As a good example, in this CNN newscast, Phillips states that he is a “Vietnam Times Veteran” while CNN runs the label below him quoting him as saying “I am a Vietnam Veteran…” which is not what he said.

I was USMC, Vietnam 1966 and 1967. I’ve never heard of a Marine “recon ranger.” This guy is a fraud.
The NDSM was given to EVERYBODY that went through Basic and AIT in the early 70’s. I was in the Army Reserve and got one during Basic at Knox. But I would never refer to myself as a Vietnam vet. I think only guys who served in-country deserve that privilege,

He served with Jane Fonda in N. Nam.
Not to split hairs but I was always told that a Vietnam era veteran was in that period from 1973 ( after we left ) to 1977 ( Draft and GI bill ended ) as to differentiate them from Vietnam veterans who were in country.
Oh come now. He’s an Indian. He was a tracker who detected broken twigs and the tire tracks of enemy vehicles. He was able to sniff out the enemy with his Indian powers of smell.
Absolutely. I served Stateside from 1970 to 1976 and I am a veteran, but I am not a Vietnam Veteran. There is a huge difference. Not everyone that served during that time served in Vietnam. However, all of us supported the war effort in some fashion and were very aware of it.
Serving for that amount of time with the prospect of going to war “counts.”
Please don’t dismiss your service. MOST vets never see or hear a shot fired in anger. Most that do, wouldn’t wish it on anyone else.

I don’t claim being a Vietnam vet since I believe that belongs to those with in country service. I was in the Navy during that period but not in or near Vietnam.
I read a great book, ‘Last Men Out’ which was pretty scary and hair-raising.
There was one scene in there where they actually took a helicopter back to an US Consulate building, only to see NVA tanks lined up in the courtyard.
Crazy bastards flew up to the flagpole, one guy stepped out on the skid and cut the American flag away so the NVA wouldn’t cut it down and stomp on it, while the NVA were so startled they just gaped, then began shooting.

He may have rightfully been awarded the Vietnam service ribbon even if he did not serve in Vietnam. As long as he was in the service during a certain time frame that extended after the troops were withdrawn. I should know, I got one. It was a long time ago, friends.
Yep, ain’t that the truth! I have never got over how, when we got off the plane in Seattle, we were like ghosts and nobody gave a crap about us soldiers with dirty fatigues and jungle boots were back in the states (world).
We really could care less at the time but it was a cold, cold feeling.

Personally, this guy has the stench of the “Veterans Against War” group, which is full of Lefties who all say they are combat vets, but I am certain there were more than a few who simply weren’t.
I have encountered them and interacted with them at various demonstrations in DC, and they all gave me the impression they were simply trying to go back to the salad days of the Sixties antiwar demonstrations, even to the point of wearing the same clothes, Sixties-era field jackets with peace signs painted on them (they probably purchased them at The Gap)
I see this guy as having weaseled his way in early on, saying he was a Vietnam Vet, nobody questioned him, and eventually it snowballed with people and groups afterwards simply looking at his earlier event attendance and status and accepting his veteran status as a fact.
It is like Leftism itself, build on a foundation of lies and fallacies, and we never attack that faulty foundation and expend all of our energy on the secondary offshoots of those lies.
Maybe the guy is a Vietnam Vet. If so I will apologize here and publicly for doubting him. But to me, right now, the guy is a stinking, anti-American Leftist Stolen valor Liar.
If any if this gets to court, wonder if Phillips’ DD-214 could be obtained through discovery....

Someone posted a link to video of the entire interaction including the “Black Israelites” or whatever they called themselves, and those people were agitating for an ass-kicking for sure.
I was impressed that the kids from the Catholic school showed restraint, the vitriol that spewed from that small group of racist blacks was that bad.
