He should have called himself a Viet Era veteran instead ,, that’s if he saw no combat, wasn’t lifted off the roof of the Saigon embassy by heli, been a ‘Recon Ranger’ and such ..

altho I hear he has jumped over pipelines.. we’ll have to let the dust settle .. or he could release his DD214.

Granted Marine recon went to Army Ranger school to get their jump wings. I doubt many real Marines called themselves Marine Recon Ranger. Marines and Army were like oil and water and inter service rivalries were deep. I’m sure FR has a few actual VN vet Gyrenes that can inform.

Re: Retrieving the Flag

That’s a great story.

Thanks for sharing it.

Re: “Marines and Army were like oil and water and inter service rivalries were deep.”

My Dad was an Army field radar specialist who landed D+1 on Saipan and Iwo Jima.

He would laughingly say, “I got a little lonely sometimes,” since he was outnumbered 99-1 by Marines and Sailors.

On the plus side, my Dad was also a Judo instructor, and he always minded his own business, so nobody messed with him.

He may have rightfully been awarded the Vietnam service ribbon even if he did not serve in Vietnam. As long as he was in the service during a certain time frame that extended after the troops were withdrawn. I should know, I got one. It was a long time ago, friends

I was awarded the VSM with star due to operations we did in 1959 and 1961.
Also got AFEM for stuff done 1958-62.

HOWEVER, it took until 2003 or so for the Government to ‘admit’ we were there - officially....

This Phillips was probably too young and green for Embassy Duty ESPECIALLY when we were pulling out.
He possibly may have been involved in the Mayaguez ‘incident’ in May of 1975.

I’m so sorry. I sure he and his crew mates were total studs, who gave the last full measure and then some.

I remember when I read it, and thought “Man, those are some stone cold crazy grunts there...I’m glad they are on our side!”

Phillips would have been 16 at the time the Marines all left Viet Nam. He is now saying that he was not in Viet Nam after some in the MSM did the math and confronted him.

I just got home and found Don Shipley's video.

"Chief Stolen Valor" has been confirmed.

And Don Shipley, in his video, had not seen this one, where Chief Stolen Valor says, “Well, as a Vietnam veteran....”

He says it at about 1:05.

"...we don’t need ribbons to know who we were or what we did."

Of course. "Off topic, have you seen the film K-19 The Widowmaker? Great cold war at sea film. And the Russky’s who went into the reactor to save their boat were heroes, commies or not."

Yes, very suspenseful movie, but don't know how much is factual. If it happened as portrayed, yes the Sailors were heroic. My favorite military film now: "13 Hours. The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" based on the book written by three guys who survived. I will never forgive Hillary or Obama for not reacting to that cluster, especially after Ambassador Stevens had repeatedly requested more security.

Then there were the military brass who wouldn't authorize a fly-over or make a decision about what uniform to wear so as not to "escalate" the problem. Pfft.

Agreed. I’ve seen 13 Hours a bunch of times now. Great flick.
