The Supreme Court has suspended scheduled oral arguments on the Trump administrations plans to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
Oral arguments were to be held February 19, the day Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was expecting to return to the bench, after missing the past two weeks of the public sessions, while recovering from recent lung cancer surgery.
But in a brief order on Friday, the justices decided to put matters on hold after a federal district court judge on Tuesday ruled the government could not proceed with its plans. Challengers to the census question then asked the justices to dismiss the related pending appeal, saying the issue was moot. The high court indicated it would now decide whether the case should proceed.
Separate legal challenges in California and New York from a coalition of states, cities, and civil rights groups claim the citizenship question would discourage immigrants from participation in the government survey, and that an undercount would jeopardize federal funding for a range of programs, as well as representation in Congress.
The Justice and Commerce Departments say its population count will be accurate, and that failure to answer the question will not mean an automatic invalidation.
The specific issue the Supreme Court was asked to address was what evidence a federal judge can consider in the current lawsuit, specifically depositions from top administration officials who would be asked to justify inclusion of the census question.

That is NOT a legitimate reason.

They forget to say ILLEGAL immigrants.
So, the court will not hear appeal?
Are they are waiting for Ginsberg’s replacement to hear the matter?
The libs are always tell us that illegals dont qualify for welfare. But here they are complaining that if they are not counted it will reduce welfare benefits.
Judicial legislation?
I’ve been corrected on this. It’s ‘illegal ALIENS’.
It would save a lot of money if we just let the courts run everything...Wouldn’t it, folks? /s
send everyone the american community survey.
If our juristocracy had bothered to check facts, citizenship questions have been on prior censuses. They weren’t a problem then and are not one now.
They are intruders, interlopers.
If it doesn’t ask for citizenship status, I hope EVERYONE who thinks it should puts the damned thing in the trash.

WTF One OBAMA federal judge says the census cant ask the question and THAT decision is accepted as final? Or am I missing something.

They do.
Time is running out to get this settled for the 2020 census!!!
I don’t know what the drop dead date might be but at some point soon the census questions must be settled so that the massive logistics of doing the census can get underway.
I’d accept “foreign invaders” too.
