Former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, now a Fox News commentator, predicted Sunday the partial government shutdown would continue at least through President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, and Republicans would be seen as the winners.
If the current partial shutdown continues through Friday, it would be the longest on the books. Chaffetz, speaking on Fox News Sunday, said he believes the shutdown would still be going on at that point, and would likely not end before President Trump gives his speech on January 29.
"I think the next pressure point is the State of the Union at the end of January. I think it will continue on to that point," he said.
A quarter of the federal government is shut down right now, with about 800,000 government workers either working without pay or furloughed. The new Democratic-controlled House has passed a series of bills to provide funding for the government and end the shutdown, but President Trump is insisting any funding bills include more than $5 billion for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, but Democrats won't budge.
During the 2016 campaign, Trump repeatedly insisted that Mexico would pay for the wall, but has flip-flopped and is now asking for taxpayer money. Trump has also repeatedly altered what he wants, moving from a wall to "steel slats" to a "barrier." Republicans are trying to change the focus, trying to paint the wall as "border security."
Chaffetz added he believes Republicans, and President Trump, will be viewed as the winners at that point.

Shutdown? When did the government shut down?
There's a load of BS propaganda. Trump never said that Mexico would pay directly. Merely controlling the border would result in Mexico indirectly paying for the wall in less than a year.
Winning! More Please!
The democrats are desperate to reopen the IRS.
Look at what's happening to the UK since they gave up a piece of their sovereignty to the EU. Merkel insisted on opening the door to everyone....and has had to back off.
When trump said a hundred times mexico would pay, I never heard him explain it was a reimbursement. Everyone here heard it the same way and we came up with creative ways like taxing money sent to mexico,.
And then there a few ways that a president can remove U.S. cash from Mexico without so much as asking their opinion much less their consent.
What was Trump's exact meaning, if he had an exact meaning in mind, when he said it? I don't know and don't care and didn't care then I just liked hearing him say it. I knew he was intent on building the wall (and he is) and that's the substance of the matter that I cared about.
I agree.
All in all, however I think now (finally) Trump is on the right side on this issue.
Finally. He badly, needs to do this.
For real.
I like it better this way.
an escalating loss of cash sent back to Mexico by its citizens illegally parked here.
That is NOT a way Mexico would pay for the wall. Losing cash payments mailed home doesn’t get apply dot the wall in nay way. hyoid re spinning and desperate for an explanation. He said I will make Mexico pay for the wall. That is not gonna happen.
Here’s a suggestion take him for his word and admit the obvious meaning and stop spinning to protect him on this issue.
Yep he must do not or disappear into history
He should declare the emergency and put the military to work.
Forget the Dims and Mexico
Trump is FIGHTING THE GOP
The GOP wrote in legislation that the wall/barrier/fence could NOT be based on the 6 samples the Trump had built and tested.
Then they allowed the Dims to put in a "Cannot use Cement" clause.
As for "Republicans are trying to change the focus, trying to paint the wall as "border security." ...this is what the dims call it .... this is what the dims want...some drones and lights that can be turned off at any time....a porous border.
In any case the "repeatedly altered what he wants" keeps the opposition off guard.
I hope the shut down lasts as long as it takes.
The longer it lasts the more frantic the dims get...and Cements in Steel his 2020 second term (puns intended).
If you took him literally that’s on you for not being too bright. ;-)
What happens if Nancy fails to negotiate the back pay for those workers who have been furloughed?
I am pretty stupid. I tried to learn english and the meaning of words. My parents couldn’t teach me to read minds so I could defend the indefensible. It is you who are delusional not me or the hundreds here who took the same meaning and came up with suggestions. You alone in your little world.
Alone in my little world ... of coming up with suggestions? And leave my hyoid of it.
You could at least be honest and admit that your 11 doesn’t meet any definition of Mexico paying.
That’s nonsense. Of course that means Mexico pays. One of their biggest sources of income is money sent back by Mexicans working here.
Maybe it’s because I was born here and my first and only language is English but I didn’t take Trump literally. You did. Too bad for you.
I never thought Trump mean Mexico was going to write checks to fund the Wall, that would be silly to expect.
