The terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad reason the military wants to stay in Syria
NY Post ^ | December 29, 2018 | Steven W. Mosher

On December 19, 2018, President Trump declared correctly that “we have won against ISIS,” and announced that the remaining 2,000 American troops in Syria would be withdrawn.

The president has made the right decision. Having won the war against ISIS, he does not want to lose the peace by getting into a military conflict with the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s forces, or with the Iranians or the Russians, or even with the Turks for that matter.

As the father of an Army officer who is in theater right now, I think I have a right to an opinion. And in my opinion, the desert sands of Syria are not worth a single American life.

Everyone agrees that the commander in chief should bring our troops home from any overseas combat theater as soon as the mission is complete.

But what is the mission?

The Left and the Fedgov was planning on at least of proxy war with Russia by now. Trump didn’t play along.

The question is “Why now? Why Russia?”

China, the true future security threat has paid off or co opted such a large chunk of Congress, the DOD and the higher officer corps, the intelligence community and the foreign policy establishment that there is no source of traction for opposing the Chinese scheming. However, K Street and their masters do need the large amounts of cash that purposeless interminable conflicts generate from service contracts and all the BS think tank and advisory whores get paid for. Russia is a good villain, they seem brutish, they have a language few speak, and they have been our opponent since forever. And they are white. That means they are the perfect villains for the establishment to use to constantly generate perpetual conflict for perpetual peace.

“it’s shocking how frequently FR is virtually indistinguishable from DU these days.”

Baloney. It’s shocking how many people confuse patriotism with blind support for anything CIA/State/USGovt says.

My consistent view of this whole thing is Assad was and is no more than a stink bug whose obliteration would cost us far more than it would gain. Indeed, even though we happily sponsored the AQ/ISIS monsters in the guise of "promoting freedom and democracy," nobody ever made, or genuinely attempted to make, even as convincing a case for overthrowing him as was made with Saddam Hussein. After all, neither Obola, the Witch, Kerry, nor McLame ever said what good overthrowing him would do. Also, none of them bothered to consider the possibly fatal damage overthrowing a long-time Russian client, who was doing us no discernible harm, would do to our already sensitive relations with Russia. Those who were fanatically beating the war drums utterly ignored what happened in 1914 when Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia, a Russian client state that actually may have provoked an invasion: WW I and the substantial destruction of Western, Christian civilization. In short, Syria was an immensely dangerous trap for us, as Serbia was for Austria-Hungary in 1914, and we managed to have a really smart President who is getting us out of it and probably preventing world nuclear war by so doing.

He probably had more guts than John M. Butler did win the MOH twice. Now what he did today would have probably gotten him the Navy Cross and the Silver Star. At the time , before WW1 there were no other medals for Marines than the very rare Brevet Medal, which ranked just behind the MOH. Butler was a bastard but he was a brave man, one who did not seem to have any fear in battle.

Bullcrap. He saved the nation when approached to lead the bonus Army to overthrow Roosevelt. He turned them in. The same cabal waited a few more years and installed the national security state which Eisenhower warned us about, and which then went on to murder JFK.

Butler was a hero. Not to mention well deserved two medals of honor.

ISIS is probably not dead. At least the huge motivation behind it among Middle Easterners isn’t. There’s really no reason to be in Syria. There are too many countries there who wish us ill and this conflict could get much bigger and for what?

Butler made some mistakes. But he wasn’t a bad guy. He was simply a constitutional American, from Philly, at a time that became unfashionable. He drove his men hard, and probably did do 6.5 day work weeks of performing hard labor.
Marines have always been a level just above slave labor.

Hence the term....”Lance coolie”.

There is another reason for the withdrawal. Check it out. Not only does it make sense, it’s true. All the rest is just uninformed speculation and an opportunity to promote one’s favorite cause.

“More than that, Russia’s mission was to establish their own mission and renew their bases and build new ones.”

Russia showed zero interest in that until we made clear moves to depose their ally of 40+ years. Who would expect anything different on response.

“The view is (with some justification) that letting Assad stay will only allow Syria to move further into Russia’s orbit.”

“Letting Assad stay” him stay. I was not aware of that article in the constitution that allowed us to get final say on who will be the leaders of other nations.

Money and officer glory. The military is a bureaucracy. Bureaucracies exist for their own interests, NOT the best interests of America.

The WWII vets weren't afraid to say that. But perhaps because so few of us have served, now everyone in a uniform is a "hero". Thanks for your honesty.

Your point is proven by making an unfounded claim and providing no evidence whatsoever to back it up?

Are you going senile, John?

Sorry the Bonus Army or what was left of it were dispersed by the US Army, Ft Meyer garrison troops including the 3rd Cavalry commanded by Col Geo Patton and the plans and ops officer was Maj Dwight Eisenhower. This ‘millionaires plot’ is nonsense and was nothing more than alcohol fueled blather at the Union League. Butler constantly pushed this from behind the scenes to keep his name in the papers. Smedley Butler is only the second senior Marine I have ever heard Marines to openly disparage to non-Marines. The other being Gen David Shoup.

Exactly right about China. China has an economy something like ten times the size of Russia. China IS expansionist. China DOES pervasively spy on America and interfere in our elections (starting with cash to the Clintons).

It’s retarded to hear all the clamoring about the Russian “threat”, when China is 10 times the threat and IS on a road to dominance. Anyone ever hear of Hollywood changing a film around because Russia got mad? They do it for China and the moslems everyday. But the Chinese pay our leaders and opinion makers well.

China and Islam is the threat...but the magicians want you to focus on the Russian hand puppet to distract you to their other hand accepting camel jockey and Chinese money.
