Shoppers delivered the strongest holiday sales increase for U.S. retailers in six years, according to early data.
Total U.S. retail sales, excluding automobiles, rose 5.1% between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24 from a year earlier, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks both online and in-store spending with all forms of payment.
The figures suggest a stock-market swoon and partial government shutdown havent curbed consumer confidence and spending.
Wall Street is running around like a chicken with its head cut off, while Mr. and Mrs. Main Street are happy with their jobs, enjoying their best wage increases in a decade, said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners, a retail research and consulting firm. A recent drop in gas prices has helped last-minute spending, he said.

Wouldnt Tysons Corner be affected by the government shutdown? Not only does DC and its suburbs have the usual exodus from Christmas to New Years, but the addition of the adjournment of Congress from Dec 22 to Dec 27.
Raise your hand if you would even notice that 75 percent of the govt was shut down.
Well yeah of course pornography usage would go down because this is what the majority of men who work for the govt look at for up to SEVEN HOURS A DAY, in one man’s case.

I’ve heard of a few minor skirmishes over the latest Air Jordans, and some craziness at a few WalMarts, but yeah, people generally behaved themselves this year.
The fake Trump news probably crowded it out of the news stream.

I don't typically get into the shopping crowds around Christmas, but when I did this year I was pleasantly surprised by many strangers in conversation wishing me a "Merry Christmas" and having a very light-hearted, friendly attitude toward others. And I noticed this among various races, without laws requiring "niceness."

Yup. Wonder how high those credit card bills will be?? We got rid of those monsters years ago. If it can’t be paid by the debit card, it don’t get bought.
