Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday night confirmed she will pay her interns at least $15 an hour.
Time to walk the walk, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns. We will be one of them.
Her message came after The Washington Post confirmed with her chief of staff that she intended to pay her interns the amount.
Her tweet comes the day after Ocasio-Cortez called for lawmakers to increase pay for their interns and staffers.
The rising Democratic star, a self-described democratic socialist, tweeted Monday that she visited a restaurant in Washington where she met several staff members who also work on Capitol Hill.
"This is a disgrace. Congress of ALL places should raise [Members' Representational Allowances] so we can pay staff an actual DC living wage," she wrote.
It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff just bc Republicans want to make a statement about fiscal responsibility.
A 2017 report from non-profit group Pay Our Interns found that in the Senate, 51 percent of Republicans and 31 percent of Democrats pay their interns.
The study found that in the House, just 8 percent of Republicans and 3.6 percent of Democrats pay interns.
Both chambers included funds to pay interns in appropriations bills earlier this year, set to take effect in 2019.
The fewer aides that Occasional-Cortex has, the better.
You should have put a (!) after oblivious and left it at that.
Oh, really, she will pay? Out of her own pocket? How generous
Doubt very much out of her pocket- she who cannot afford DC rent.
She will pay out of donations or have some PAC pay the freight
“Both chambers included funds to pay interns in appropriations bills earlier this year, set to take effect in 2019.”
SO.... she’s trying to take credit for something that was voted on before she even got ELECTED to office ?
Yeah, paying HER interns with appropriated money - she’s an absolute saint! Obviously she hopes people as stupid as she, think it’s coming out of her salary.
Not in DC!
No. She is saying this because....... (last line of excerpt)
"Both chambers included funds to pay interns in appropriations bills earlier this year, set to take effect in 2019."
It's coming out of your pocket.
That's what it looks like. Taking credit for something she had no part it.
In DC....you would still be on marginal living with $15 an hour.
WE will pay????? Who is WE? I guess WE do know. It is WE the taxpayer!
” Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns. We will be one of them. “
Note from Commander Obvious (but someone with 25 years in the NCR): $15/hour is "chump change" in that neighborhood!
What about Equality?
Shouldn’t the interns get $174,000/yr?
In New York city and D.C. $15 and hour might as well be 10 cents an hour. Absolutely impossible to live on. My brother lives in New York city pays $2500 for a tiny one bedroom apt. and his landlord is hassling him to move out so he can charge MORE. They got one bedroom apartments there now going for as much as $5000 a month. It absolutely baffles me why anybody would live there now unless they want to burn through money really fast. My brother seems to think it’s a status symbol. I told him he should get his head checked. I moved out 8 years ago, I couldn’t stand it anymore, the money I was going through was absolutely insane, and now they got a commie running it? I’m surprised the tax rate isn’t 100% yet.
She’s burning up her allocated funds worse than when Homer Simpson became garbage commissioner.
She is really dumb. Those internships in Congress, besides letting kids have great access to sex with old men, are actually FAR MORE VALUABLE than $15/hr. People take them for their resumés. They can be great stepping stones to getting into prestigious law schools or careers. Its really not about the money.
