The Supreme Court announced Friday it will grant an expedited hearing on the Trump administrations request to add a question concerning citizenship to the 2020 census. The justices set oral argument for February, converting what had been a narrow request involving one part of the case into a full grant of review.

Kalifornia ain’t gonna like this.
Hopefully, past precedent will prevail.
finally a headline to sink your teeth into
very very very wikid supah huge.
Noncitizens count for congressional representation, which is totally insane. The court should overturn that too.
The problem as I see it is....citizen, legal resident or illegal resident
But you still have to be a citizen to vote...at least in Federal Elections.
I don’t think it’s that huge.
They can just lie on the form.
The question is worse than ineffectual if not accompanied by a) the requirement to verify and a means to do so and, b) a penalty for making a false claim of citizenship. Otherwise, they will just claim to be for fear of losing welfare benefits.
Hopefully, the anchor baby issue will also be resolved prior to the 2020 census.
Won’t matter, illegals are law breakers so they will just lie about being a citizen anyway. Just like when they get a drivers license and vote.
I still support this step, I’m just saying. illegals are law breakers, checking a box on a form without any risk of penalty - easy peasy.
Not just a question of representative. It is also a voting rights question. If there are 10,000,000 voting age citizens and 12,000,000 registered voters then citizens are having their votes voided by non citizens
Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States
according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State...

‘Non-citizens’ are not excluded.
I agree but I’ll go a step further.. Illegals will throw the form in the trash.
Let’s hope the lawyers who will be representing the President in this case, will present a good argument, that the Supreme Court Justices cannot refuse.
I’ve some extended family and inlaws who are legal residents here. They have almost literally every right AND obligation a citizen has except for the right to vote and a risk of being deported if found guilty of aggravated felony (as I understand it at least).
I don’t see them as a problem. While they do not (temporarily, some are already naturalized) have the right to fully voice their political opinion because they can’t vote, they are still legal residents that deserve some representation numbers wise.
I’m not a fan of the 3/5 compromise when it comes to human beings, so that won’t work. It’s an either all or nothing proposition.
The illegals don’t count in my book, but the citizenship question is questionable in my humble opinion.
The choice on old census records was Citizen or alien.
There is a penalty for lying on the census.
If you refuse to give out the information or you deliberately give inaccurate information, you can be in legal trouble. According to United States Code, Title 13 (Census), Chapter 7 (Offenses and Penalties), SubChapter II, if you’re over 18 and refuse to answer all or part of the Census, you can be fined up to $100. If you give false answers, you’re subject to a fine of up to $500. If you offer suggestions or information with the “intent to cause inaccurate enumeration of population,” you are subject to a fine of up to $1,000, up to a year in prison, or both. Here’s the official verbiage:
221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers
(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.
(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body. Sec. 222. Giving suggestions or information with intent to cause inaccurate enumeration of population Whoever, either directly or indirectly, offers or renders to any officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof engaged in making an enumeration of population under subchapter II, IV, or V of chapter 5 of this title, any suggestion, advice, information or assistance of any kind, with the intent or purpose of causing an inaccurate enumeration of population to be made, shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
Praises to Justices Kavannaugh, Gorsuch, Thomas, Alito etc. Good Supreme Court decisions are one of the many reasons I voted for Trump.
Yeah, because no illegal will say he’s a citizen./s
This might help, but I don’t see cooperation from non-citizens. In too many places, one doesn’t even need to show ID to VOTE. Do you believe this will have enforcement of showing proof one is a citizen? I’m not seeing folks, like myself even, ready to show their birth certs. We couldn’t even get a President to show a birth certificate.
Why don’t we just skip the messy election business and let the courts run things? /unbelievable
