Anatomy Does Not Determine Gender, Experts Say

By Denise Grady

Oct. 22, 2018

Defining gender as a condition determined strictly by a person’s genitals is based on a notion that doctors and scientists abandoned long ago as oversimplified and often medically meaningless.

Researchers who have studied gender issues and provided health care to people who do not fit the typical M/F pigeonholes said that the Trump administration’s latest plan to define gender goes beyond the limits of scientific knowledge.

“The idea that a person’s sex is determined by their anatomy at birth is not true, and we’ve known that it’s not true for decades,” said Dr. Joshua D. Safer, an endocrinologist and executive director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Health System in New York. He is also president of the United States Professional Association of Transgender Health.

But exactly what does determine gender identity — a person’s powerful, core knowledge of who they are — is not so clear.

“We know that there is a significant, durable biological underpinning to gender identity,” Dr. Safer said. “What we don’t know are all of the biological factors at play that explain gender identity. As far as we in the mainstream biological-medical community understand it in 2018, it is hard-wired, it is biological, it is not entirely hormonal, and we do not have identified genes, so we cannot specifically say it is genetic.”

Prostates do not produce sperm, testes do.

Gender is a term of psychology which is not science.

Since I have a subscription to The Times, I could read the comments.

A brilliant remark is that Transgenderism is the Phrenology of our time. He or she is getting a lot more “likes” than usual. Not every Times reader is an idiot.

There IS one single bottom-line characteristic of sex (NOT gender, you English-abusing fools).

It is whether one has a so-called “Y” (really a V) or not.

Unless you have a very rare condition, which is astronomically rare, that is the thing that says if you’re male or not.

Chromosomes define gender.

Duh.

XY or XX.

Nothing else.

Well this is true.

Anatomy determines sex. If sex cannot be determined by anatomy, which happens occasionally as a fetal development defect, DNA will help.

Genders are made up constructs. Many languages assign genders to different nouns.

So I guess newborns will have no gender until they grown up enough to ask? What will we put on birth certificates. This should really be the end of any sort of gender preferences or any sort of division of sports, bathrooms, hiring quotas, etc. “Human” is the classification and X or X/Y ? Or perhaps DNA needs to be thrown out as well. Lunacy.

Gender is a grammatical term that has no biological/psychological meaning at all.

Not so fast, NYT. We see what you're up to. You were just going to sneak in the premise that sex and "gender identity" are the same thing, but that's stealing a base.

(With the caveat that there is a very rare condition where some people are born with some of the genitals of both sexes.)

Does that not leave room for the possibility that one may be born with the "wrong" genitals?

My problem is that I have observed a young "male" who has displayed feminine traits from the age of 2-3, well before he got into the larger society. There is no evidence of abuse, his parents appear normal, loving and responsible and he has a typical, slightly older brother.

It is my considered, but lay, opinion that his circumstance is due solely to something that did, or did not happen in the womb. I think of it as a birth defect inasmuch as it is not an outcome nature would intend.

Such line of reasoning leads to the next question. "On what basis should he not be entitled to a place in our society free of ridicule or scorn?"

“Cis” and “trans” are not limited to organic chemistry. IIRC, Caesar’s Commentaries referred to cisalpine Gaul and transalpine Gaul.

The only thing that is clear is that “Gender” and “Gender Identity” are two completely different things. One is a genetic fact, the other a recent artificial social construct. So be it.
