CNN) The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that the probable cause of a crash that killed 12 people on a church bus near Concan, Texas, in March 2017 was that the 20-year-old man whose truck hit the bus was under the influence of marijuana and a sedative.
In its report, the board says that there has been an increase in the number of drug-impaired drivers across the country and that something must be done about it.
That call to action seems to match up with a report released Thursday from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safetys Highway Loss Data Institute.

Now, I ask you, who couldn’t see this coming?
I’m shocked!
re: “... a test to determine how stoned you are.”
Google search on: pot reaction time studies
Also texting while driving.
Did anyone not expect this? So much for the “toker’s don’t harm anyone” BS.
How many deaths caused by high drivers? Is it worth it?
I expect to see data showing that states allowing MJ use legally will also/have also seen an uptick in other drug use/crime/accidents.
“And no I dont support the 18th Amendment!”
Why not?
” For all cannabis growers and producers make a statement to the public with claims that cannabis, on the record, is harmless.
Then, when it proven that it is harmful, causes cancer and all of the same nasty things that cigarettes cause, you will be on record, like the tobacco companies for misleading consumers about the safety risks of cannabis. I dare you! “
Why would they? That is a strawman as bad as some leftist demanding that all gun manufacturers make the same statement that guns are a net benefit to society, then when someone uses one to shoot up a school or rob a bank, that they can “be on record”.
You can even make the same dare to makers of cell phones if you want or even vitamin supplements.
“How many deaths caused by high drivers? Is it worth it?”
How many are caused by mishandling or malicious use of a firearm?
Is it worth it, Mr. Hogg? Or are the prohibition people going to hold every negative as the collective responsibility of everyone else to have prevented?
Really sorry to hear that.
The amount of people smoking weed and driving in my area seems to be increasing. When I'm driving, it's at least once a day I smell the stench of weed being sucked into my car. Numerous times I've been stuck in traffic behind a stoner and the stench just pours in.
Far fewer than texting drivers, I guarantee you that.
I see plenty of PSA's and information on TV, in conversations with people and elsewhere saying don't text and drive and don't drink and drive. Both have become taboo and that's a good thing.
I see no messaging whatsoever about don't smoke weed and drive. Few people talk about it. I even see a few here down playing it.
I dont think I made my comment clear. I might be stupid enough to try pot every 30 years or so but I did not drive. Other stupid people like me probably do go to Colorado, smoke, drive and cause accidents.
This is a problem separate from legalization. I see it daily. Especially around 4-7 pm. People get off work and smoke in their cars. They are fatigued from their shift and clearly relaxing a little too much. There are probably more drunk driving accidents at that time too.
Wait til you get home.
That is horrible. Im so sorry.
This is my experience and I dont like it either. I am sober driving miles on packed LA freeways, and I find it hard to stay super focused to avoid accidents in stop and go. Smelling pot from a car around me daily is not a good feeling.
Why wouldn’t they? What, are they afraid? And that would make the municipalities complicit.
Again, I dare them. If it a straw man, then they have nothing to lose, correct?
But I have to ask again “Why would they”?
If it is used in moderation by responsible people, or for some medicinal purpose, then they are perfectly in the clear. From what I’ve read, most people busted for it are busted at home for growing it, not in the operation of a vehicle, or just having it on their person.
It isnt their responsibility to vouch for everyone that may use it, and then do something illegal or dangerous or use it to excess anymore than the cigarette makers, alcohol producers, or the people that make Tylenol. Are kind of asking them to take on a liability voluntarily?
“I see no messaging whatsoever about don’t smoke weed and drive.”
Because the legality of it is ambiguous (mostly illegal). It’s like telling people to not drop acid and drive in an ad.
If it becomes legal, then it needs to be a major message.
Drunk Driver....Comes to a stop sign at a high rate of speed and blows right by without stopping.
Stoned Driver...Approaches stop sign a very slow speed, stops and waits for the stop sign to turn green.
