President Trump praised Confederate Geader Robert E. Lee as "a great general" on Friday during a campaign rally in Lebanon, Ohio.
"So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldnt beat Robert E. Lee," Trump said before launching into a monologue about Lee, Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
"He was going crazy. I dont know if you know this story. But Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I cant beat Robert E. Lee,'" Trump said.
"And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. Theres only one problem they didnt know how the hell to win. They didnt know how to fight. They didnt know how," he continued.
Trump went on to say, multiple times, that Grant had a drinking problem, saying that the former president "knocked the hell out of everyone" as a Union general.
"Man was he a good general. And hes finally being recognized as a great general," Trump added.
NBC News (@NBCNews) October 13, 2018 Trump has drawn criticism for his defense of Confederate statues, including those of Robert E. Lee.
He drew widespread condemnation last year following a deadly rally in Charlottesville, Va., saying that white nationalist protesters were there to oppose the removal of a "very, very important" statue.
"They were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee, Trump said at the time. This week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?
Trump, speaking at another rally in Ohio last year, said that he can be one of the most presidential presidents to hold office. "
With the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any president thats ever held this office, he said to a crowd in Youngstown.
You want to make it about slavery, because you have no other argument to justify the Northern armies invading the South.
So he really didn’t have that much of a problem with outrunning his logistics, did he?
The Washington Post is still working to cause disaster in this nation, and I think we would do better to turn our artillery on that, and blow it to hell and gone.
You do realize there were slave states in the north don’t you!! You do realize Lincoln did nothing to free those slaves. You do realize Grant owned a slave and did not free him till after the war!!! You do realize Lincolns first choice was Lee!! So his first choice was a slaveholder and his final choice was a slaveholder!!!
Oh please, not that crap again. Moral relativism never works.
Slavery in the North was a shadow of what existed in the South, pal.
Oh! I see...slavery is OK if done in acceptable numbers. I’m sure the slaves were understandable of that!!!
Once Grant crossed the Mississippi River on the 29 April, he was not resupplied until he started the siege of Vicksburg on May 18. In that 20 day period his army fought 7 battles, captured Jackson MS. and finally laid siege to Vicksburg. Grant’s army strength was about 77,000 men. When Lee went into Pennsylvania, he had a wagon train 25 miles long to support his army of 75,000 men.
1st in his class at West Point. Commandant at West Point. Asked by Lincoln to command US troops after Civil War started. Fought a defensive war against US troops for 5 years. Yes I think that qualifies him as a great general.
I'd say anyone who doesn't like being called a "North hater" shouldn't go around casually calling others "South haters".
You disagree?
Charles Mason was first in 1829 graduating class at West Point. Lee was second. Mason resigned his commission in 1831 and never served in the army again.
Two years after the Northern Armies invaded the South? Why do you suppose they would want to give anyone a taste of their own medicine?
His family were also particularly notable as both his father & uncle were among General Wasington's closest lieutenants.
Patriots, North & South, have always revered General Lee, who also epitomized the very decency that the anti-Trump, anti-Kavanaugh fanatics of today have decided to totally abandon. We must all solemnly endeavor to defeat their loathsome tactics, with God's help, in the coming contest.
Damn the liars; damn the hate driven. Full speed ahead in our determination to restore the historic culture of America!
Our Last Chance? [Can Donald Trump Revive The "Spirit of '76?]
Have you ever heard that joke in which the punchline is:
We've already determined what kind of girl you are, now we are just haggling over the price.
You can't don the moral armor of fighting against the South because of "slavery" when you continue to practice it yourself. It clearly wasn't "slavery" that was causing the invasion and fighting.
If great means being the most profligate with your men’s lives then yes Lee is amongst the greatest.
According to Freeman he was not. And Freeman has been the gold standard for Lee biographers for decades.
Lee didn't have ships to carry supplies to him. He had to do it with wagon trains and foraging.
Yeah, whatever. Your mind is closed. No one ever beats the US.
Just ask the Taliban.
