Generations of Texans have rightly drawn inspiration and strength from the heroes of the Alamo the brave men who fought to the death to defend the battle-scarred mission in San Antonio in 1836 in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico. These freedom fighters are a symbol of valor for all Americans.
It is bizarre, then, that an advisory group recommended to the Texas Board of Education that it remove the words all the heroic defenders from the states social studies curriculum describing the men who gave their lives at the Alamo.
The Board of Education was holding a hearing in Austin on the proposal Tuesday. Fortunately, according to the San Antonio Express-News, the board appeared poised to keep the words in the curriculum when it is scheduled to discuss the issue Wednesday. A final decision is expected in November.
The advisory group, called Social Studies TEKS Streamlining Work Group, even recommended dropping the requirement that students in Texas should be able to explain the importance of a letter from Col. William B. Travis, commander of the rebels at the Alamo. The letter was addressed to the People of Texas and All Americans in the World and is known as the victory or death letter.
This letter has been considered a vital founding document of Texas history ever since it inspired thousands of men to take up arms in revolution to free Texas from the oppressive regime of General Santa Anna.
Travis wrote in the letter:
The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls I shall never surrender or retreat.

A lot of people don’t realize Texas and New Mexico were being populated with people distancing themselves from the Spanish-and after 1821- the Mexican government-both were oppressive and greedy-just an arm of the government they brought over from Spain with them. Plenty of us here and in NM have ancestors who left Mexico prior to the 1800’s to escape that tyranny...
No sweat FRiend, I knew ya weren’t .. just felt like a mini-rant ;-)
Hey, I think your rant works either way, so good job.
Love me some Ray Wylie Hubbard!
Some on the inside might have been named that as well. Many of the fighters were originally from Mexico.
George P. Bush was born a Mexican national.
I’m sure his feelings are as mixed as his nationality.
Not a natural born citizen of the USA.
So, that's your pitiful excuse for trying to tie Cruz' ancestors to the Alamo attackers??
You didn't answer my original question.....what was your previous FR handle?
Even as someone quite new to Texas and to San Antonio I will not forget the Alamo, nor those office holders who are shamefully trying to sacrifice its history to the false gods of Leftist dogma.
An even worse massacre of unarmed Texans took place at nearly the same time as the Alamo defense.
The Goliad massacre was an event that occurred on March 27, 1836, during the Texas Revolution, following the Battle of Goliad in which over 400 unarmed prisoners of war from the Texian Army of the Republic of Texas were executed by the Mexican Army in the town of Goliad, Texas. This War crime is nearly forgotten by history.
The Army of Texas not only yelled, “Remember the Alamo” at the final Battle of San Jacinto. They also yelled, “Remember Goliad” as they caught the Mexican Army taking their afternoon siesta.
Cruz is a pretty common Spanish name both in Spain and in all of what used to be New Spain. There were soldiers with my family surname that fought on both sides of the war for Texas independence-it was and is a common Spanish Basque surname-all “Hispanic” surnames originated in Spain centuries ago and were brought here by Spaniards...
Absolutely, nor will I.
The Alamo is not only a symbol of heroism to Texans but to people across the nation.
As a kid raised in California I learned “remember the Alamo” and their heroic stand at a young age as I’m sure many do in our country.
Thank you!
I have two plausible theories: Either you are making fun of idiotic Leftists trolls trying to stir up division, or you are one. If you are the latter, then I feel obliged to inform you that unlike the Left, we don't judge people on what ethnic background they have. That is why we were against slavery and Jim Crow laws decades ago when the Left supported them. That is why we are against stirring up racial divisions like the Left does today by creating a false narrative that women and minorities are the perpetual victims of a cabal of white men. Racially bigoted statements out you as a Leftist friend.
Geo P is also the TX state official with [stolen] oversight authority over the Alamo.
I can’t stand George P Bush, or really any Bush, but you are an idiot.
There were people of Mexican decent on both sides of the siege of the Alamo, if that is what you are referring to.
You are so right on. Many people, some may call them Yankees, don’t understand that many “Hispanics” fought for Texas and their families are proud Americans. Maybe a few are not, but they not the majority. They have been here for generations.
Ted Cruz Supports the Alamo
Robert O’Rourke Supports Colon Kaepernick and Kneelers.
This is but one reason why Cruz will have a double digit win over that loser.
