WASHINGTON—High-stakes trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. were dramatically upended on Friday morning by inflammatory secret remarks from President Donald Trump, after the remarks were obtained by the Toronto Star.
In remarks Trump wanted to be “off the record,” Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday, according to a source, that he is not making any compromises at all in the talks with Canada — but that he cannot say this publicly because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.” In a remark he did not want published, U.S. President Donald Trump said that a possible NAFTA deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms,” according to a source.
“Here’s the problem. If I say no — the answer’s no. If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal ... I can’t kill these people,” he said of the Canadian government.
In another remark he did not want published, Trump said, according to the source, that the possible deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms.” He suggested he was scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs.
“Off the record, Canada’s working their ass off. And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala,” Trump said, according to the source. The Impala is produced at the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario.
Trump made the remarks in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg. He deemed them off the record, and Bloomberg accepted his request not to reveal them.

Thanks Robert A Cook PE. IOW, a Canadian paper printed off-the-record remarks in order to queer the whole deal, which will damage Canada, and give a further upward push to President Trump's popularity -- anyone more concerned about Canadian interests isn't a US patriot anyway.

This sounds like an attempt to destroy any chance of the U. S. and Canada coming to an agreement.

I think this was orchestrated. Yesterday Canada must have been willing to wave the white flag. Today they will lose so much face if they do. Trump doesn’t want a deal. He wants our auto plants back.
I totally agree. IF this is true, President Trump did it deliberately. It’s like a ball game, throw your opponent on the defense and they will lose. Canadians are especially prickly people, because of their jealousy of the USA. Nice play, Mr. president!

That is possible, but I’m not sure I buy into this guy’s vision all that much.
I think he wants to have a deal with Canada. If he can’t come up with a deal, it doesn’t add sheen to his record.
It also gives the Left something to criticize him for, and they are desperate for something. I think he wants to avoid giving them an arguing point.

When someone like Donald Trump makes a statement “off the record” he knows that it will end slap up against the nose of the intended recipient. It’s time Fidelito learns that Canada needs the USA a lot more than the USA needs Canada and the distortion in the natural order tolerated by several administrations is over.
