WASHINGTONHigh-stakes trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. were dramatically upended on Friday morning by inflammatory secret remarks from President Donald Trump, after the remarks were obtained by the Toronto Star.
In remarks Trump wanted to be off the record, Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday, according to a source, that he is not making any compromises at all in the talks with Canada but that he cannot say this publicly because its going to be so insulting theyre not going to be able to make a deal. In a remark he did not want published, U.S. President Donald Trump said that a possible NAFTA deal with Canada would be totally on our terms, according to a source.
Heres the problem. If I say no the answers no. If I say no, then youre going to put that, and its going to be so insulting theyre not going to be able to make a deal ... I cant kill these people, he said of the Canadian government.
In another remark he did not want published, Trump said, according to the source, that the possible deal with Canada would be totally on our terms. He suggested he was scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs.
Off the record, Canadas working their ass off. And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala, Trump said, according to the source. The Impala is produced at the General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario.
Trump made the remarks in an Oval Office interview with Bloomberg. He deemed them off the record, and Bloomberg accepted his request not to reveal them.

Well, I guess that’s the end of one-way biased deals in favor of Canada. Probably the Chinese will buy them out soon. Oh, wait, I think they already own them.
Trump’s remarks were so shocking that Trudeau raised an eyebrow (that’s all he’s got).
“In remarks Trump wanted to be off the record, Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday....”
I think I see the problem. This is of course, if it is even true.
Remember the good old days when the compliant Media hid FDR’s and JFK’S Health issues for the good of the Nation?
Remember when JFK’s and RFK’s blatant Womanizing was never discussed but was turned into Camelot?
In remarks Trump wanted to be “off the record,” Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday, according to a source, that he is not making any compromises at all in the talks with Canada but that he cannot say this publicly because “its going to be so insulting theyre not going to be able to make a deal.” In a remark he did not want published, U.S. President Donald Trump said that a possible NAFTA deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms,” according to a source.
2. Assuming that #1 is true, why would he want that? Anyone who has read “The Art of the Deal” knows that Trump ALWAYS starts a negotiation by asking for about 3 times what he is really and truly willing to settle for at the end. He’s then able to “give away” a few crumbs (yeah, I hate to quote Pelosi, but it applies here) to let the other side save face. Those few crumbs don’t take him down to his minimum acceptable limit - that’s why the guy is a multi-billionaire.
This is a negotiating gambit. Trump will graciously “allow” Canada to win a concessions so that it won’t be “all our way,” and little Fidel will be able to be a bit of a hero in Canuckistan. Meanwhile, the reality will be that our trade deficit with Canada will drop down to $10 billion/year from $18 billion/year now. That, of course, isn’t really the Big Kahuna - that’s China. But with the deal with Mexico already in the bag, and one with Canada on the front burner, we’ll be in much better shape to negotiate with China (and there are signs that they are already beginning to talk about caving in while trying to save face). The net impact of all of this on the US economy will be - to coin a phrase - YUUUUUGE. If we can get the overall trade deficit down from roughly $800 billion/year to $600 billion/year, that’s a net $200 billion/year increase in national income. It would add about 1% to the GDP each year as far as the eye can see (well, until some globalist POS gets back into office and royally F’s it up).
Whatever Trump’s opponents may think of his demeanor or his domestic policies, there is no denying that he is a whiz at business (how else do you grow a $1 million loan into a multi-billion dollar fortune?). We’ve already seen enormous benefits, and when trade gets largely solved then we will truly be “Great Again.”
Oh, BTW, most people haven’t even considered the effect of unleashing the energy industry here. Trump’s goal isn’t merely to make us energy self-sufficient, it is to make us energy DOMINANT once again. The net increase in national income that will result from going from a net energy importer to a net energy exporter will also be YUUUUGE!
wow, yeah.
I think you’re right.
The Toronto Star is not known as the ‘Tranna Red Star’ for nothing.
The ‘Star’ is known as a Lieberal Party propaganda rag, and has been for decades. Any BS the Lieberals want released (or created), they go to the Star. It is Kanaduh’s ‘Der Stürmer’.
There should be no tariffs or equal tariffs. Either get rid of 300% on dairy or we go 300% on auto. RECIPROCAL
That was a great short - I remember seeing it on the opening night of “The Empire Strikes Back.” I laughed my ass off, while all of the girls and ‘80s snowflakes were horrified.
Sounds like something right out of "Art of the Deal".
If Trump is removed from office against the will of the American voter, THERE MOST CERTAINLY WILL BE A CIVIL WAR.
Excuse me... but the Canadian government NEVER ceased trade with North Vietnam during our “conflict” overseas. So... fuggum.
The auto alliance will probably weigh in with both governments.
The deal ain’t over yet. This “leak” is either a subterfuge, a lie, or a negotiation strategy. If it doesn’t happen, Canadian auto plants are shuttered and MORE jobs are brought home.
Any one of 4 or 5 outcomes will work. And according to all the management and Leadership gurus from the 80s in the 90s... We are supposed to embrace change.
Total B.S.
I'm sure this report is raising eyebrows in Ottowa. Or, maybe, dropping them... `;)
Sounds like something right out of “Art of the Deal”.
