A vast majority 70 percent of Americans in a new poll supports "Medicare for all," also known as a single-payer health-care system.
The ReutersIpsos survey found 85 percent of Democrats said they support the policy along with 52 percent of Republicans.
Medicare for all has been in the headlines after a study by the libertarian-leaning Mercatus Center at George Mason University found it would lead to $32.6 trillion increase in federal spending over a 10-year period.
The studys author, Charles Blahous, wrote in The Wall Street Journal earlier this month that even doubling taxes would not cover the bill for a single-payer health-care system.
The policys proponents, however, point to a note in the study showing that health-care costs would also decrease by $2 trillion by 2031 if it became law.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has introduced a Medicare for all bill, has said that the Mercatus study is grossly misleading and biased .
The new Reuters poll also showed that a majority of Americans supports free college tuition. Forty-one percent of Republicans said they supported the policy, pollsters found, compared with 79 percent of Democrats.
The move to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was also opposed by a majority of respondents. Seventy percent of Republicans said they opposed abolishing the 15-year-old agency, while Democrats said they were evenly split on the issue, with roughly 44 percent in favor of abolishing it and 44 percent saying it should remain.
The Reuters poll consulted American adults throughout June and July this year. Reuters asked 2,989 respondents about Medicare for all, 5,339 about free college tuition, and 7,737 about abolishing ICE. The results have margins of error of 2 percentage points for the Medicare for all and free college tuition questions. The margin of error for the question about abolishing ICE is 1 percentage point.
Yeah, right. Wonder what select group of societal parasites they polled?
Right. Medicare pays 80 percent. You pay the rest yourself or pay big bucks for a supplement.
Never mind who will have to pay for it .... it’s FREE!
Seventy percent of Americans are ignorant and insane.
THAT'S WHAT OBAMACARE WAS INTENDED TO BE...
but...
They spent 5 times the estimated cost to create it.
It was never finished.
The Database that tied it all together was never finished. Not evn close!
It was a total failure.
Like a vampire it has come back to fife.
Again, what's the definition of "insanity??"
After the Obamacare fiasco, I don’t think so. These “polls” are rediculously unbelievable.
No they don’t. They had no idea what they were being asked in the poll.
When you call people and ask them questions like “Should all Americans get Medicare” they don’t have time to think, and even if they did, they don’t have anything in their heads that would enable them to answer sensibly. So they’re going to answer yes, because a no would sound like denying them something.
They are incapable of thinking the next logical thought: who pays?
Call up 1000 people and ask if they’re in favor of the government paying for cell phones, or meals, or TV service, or funerals, or anything. Of course they will say yes.
Medicare is not single-payer. With Medicare, you still have to pay for medical care..
That is true!
Keep in mind, those who are actually on Obamacare, majority receive subsidies to pay monthly premiums. Why wouldn’t they like it? And for the others, they probably are not just familiar enough with obamacare to hate it.
The main problem with healthcare still remains, which is that it is frightfully expensive. It is #1 reason why people go bankrupt.
Not always. I signed up for Humana gold plus HMO supplemental plan which covers Rx drugs, and it cost me nothing. Actually it PAYS ME $52 every month to stay on their plan.
I think what they like is the mistaken belief that once you get on Medicare your healthcare is free.
(s) how about the free “death panels” for medicine rationing?(/s)
Lol.... if we implemented Medicare for all within 2 years dems would be saying it is not fair that lower income people have to pay the monthly Medicare premium, plus the cost of a supplement, plus the cost of a drug plan every month. We would have to drop those costs for everyone in our society who continues to make bad choices, while dems begin means testing it for seniors who paid in all their lives.
