Trump pardons Oregon ranchers at center of 40-day standoff

President Trump on Tuesday pardoned a pair of Oregon ranchers whose arson conviction became a focus for opponents of federal government land ownership.

Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven, 49, were convicted in 2012 and sent to prison on arson charges. They had set a series of fires on their ranch that spread to federal land.

The Hammonds’ case became the inspiration for the 40-day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. The organizers wanted to protest federal land ownership.

The Hammonds distanced themselves from the occupiers and didn't endorse the action.

In a statement Tuesday announcing the pardon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emphasized uncertainties in the case and the prison terms and fines the Hammonds had already completed.

“The evidence at trial regarding the Hammonds’ responsibility for the fire was conflicting, and the jury acquitted them on most of the charges,” the White House said.

“The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West. Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency.”

According to the article in The Oregonian their sentences were commuted;

“President Donald Trump on Tuesday commuted the sentences of two eastern Oregon ranchers serving time in federal prison for setting fire to public land in a case that inflamed their supporters and gave rise to the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.”

How do you know that? Were you there when he was President? Sure, he gets the nod for being our first President, but in terms of issues needing to be dealt with, I doubt Washington would measure up against what Trump is facing. If you can’t discern the difference between when our country was founded and was hanging by a thread to make it successful and now, I can’t help you. Washington was the glue that held it together to go on and be successful. King George III said Washington was the greatest man of his time.

Where was I when Washington was president? That’s silly question. I study history.

The country was broke, the British were still at war with France and a large number of Americans wanted to repay French support for our revolution with military support for theirs, and there was a new government that nobody really had figured out how to run yet and what the roles and powers of the different branches really were. Washington was a universally beloved national figure who could have made the Presidency a virtual monarchy. Not only did he resist that but he established the precedent of self-limiting the Presidential terms to just two, a precedent that was followed by every subsequent President until FDR made himself President for life.

Bottom line: Washington was President of a new nation that was on the brink and he set it on a firm foundation and then walked away. Magnificent President.

I think he may not have known just how prevelant and deep the corruption is. I believe he thought there were many in government who wanted to put the nation and citizens first. I also believe that he has since disabused himself of that notion.

You need to go back to history class if you believe that the "country" was united about succeeding and getting the British out. I put "country" in quotes for a reason as it was not our country or even A country at the time.

Quite true! I still believe that the complexity of our current government, makes Trump a contender. The times are totally different, and as I posted, the country had a more united citizenry in Washington’s time than it does today. Problems are more easily solved when a significant majority supports the government. Today we are a house divided, which makes governance a whole lot more problematic. A large portion of our populace today want’s to do away with our Republic thanks to immigration and our public education system and it’s lying spew. We also have a hostile press today, bent on the same idea of doing away with our Republic.
