“But George Washington will always be our greatest President.”
How do you know that? Were you there when he was President? Sure, he gets the nod for being our first President, but in terms of issues needing to be dealt with, I doubt Washington would measure up against what Trump is facing. Washington had a country that was united in it’s desire to succeed and to tell the British to go home, not at all like the 45% of this country that are $hit people today, most of whom have come here as “immigrants” to see if they can subvert our form of government.
And an army united in it's desire to make him king. There are very few men who would have turned that down.
If you can’t discern the difference between when our country was founded and was hanging by a thread to make it successful and now, I can’t help you. Washington was the glue that held it together to go on and be successful. King George III said Washington was the greatest man of his time.
Where was I when Washington was president? That’s silly question. I study history.
Have a good day.
Trump is a great president and Ronald Reagan is smiling.
The country was broke, the British were still at war with France and a large number of Americans wanted to repay French support for our revolution with military support for theirs, and there was a new government that nobody really had figured out how to run yet and what the roles and powers of the different branches really were. Washington was a universally beloved national figure who could have made the Presidency a virtual monarchy. Not only did he resist that but he established the precedent of self-limiting the Presidential terms to just two, a precedent that was followed by every subsequent President until FDR made himself President for life.
Bottom line: Washington was President of a new nation that was on the brink and he set it on a firm foundation and then walked away. Magnificent President.
You need to go back to history class if you believe that the "country" was united about succeeding and getting the British out. I put "country" in quotes for a reason as it was not our country or even A country at the time.
I don't know anything about you except that you seem to be one of those people who believes the history of the world began the day you became aware.
Ever read Washington's Farewell Address? :-)
Hardly. One third of the "country" supported the British, one third wanted no part of either side and one third supported the rebellion.
PRESIDENT Washington led the fledgling Army of the USA against the Whiskey Rebellion rebels inside the US during his term in office.
So, yeah, country had its “cranksters” even back then. Washington was uniquely qualified by his temperament and intellect to set the precedents which guided his successors.
But when he was called to do so, he also became our only President to personally lead the Army in a military operation in 1795.
As in arguments about the best baseball players or NFL running backs, the only open question is: “Who was the SECOND best one?”

That is pretty far from the case. Royalist sympathizers abounded in the colonies.

George was a great president for his time.
Don Trump is a great president for our time.
Apples and oranges are great for fruit salad.
Considering his complete lack of experience at governance, Trump is doing an amazing job.

The country was broke from a devastating war, there British-backed Indians still on the frontier and not far in the future was the War of 1812 and the Red Stick rebellion. The Barbary Pirates had no respect for our shipping [and neither did Europeans] and we had nothing with which to confront them and prevent them from intercepting and capturing our merchants as they sailed the seas to obtain desperately needed goods and market whatever war-weary Americans had managed to harvest in a land with virtually no infrastructure.
A third of the country were loyal to Britain. The slavery issue was always looming and building.
The press was just as snarky and lying and vicious as now.
