President Trump is scheduled to announce one of the most important decisions of his presidency on Monday: the name of his second nominee to the Supreme Court, to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
This will be a defining moment for President Trumps legacy. Every president is remembered for his nominations to the Supreme Court and not always positively.
Past Republican presidents have repeatedly nominated justices who failed to live up to the principles they were selected to represent. For example, President George H.W. Bushs selection of liberal David Souter was one of the most consequential errors of his presidency.
Indeed, many of the worst liberal judicial activists, including William Brennan, John Paul Stevens, and Harry Blackmun the author of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide were appointed by Republican presidents. These mistakes haunt the legacies of presidents, a specter they can never shake. We cannot let this happen again.
Most presidents are forced to gamble on a nominee they do not truly know someone who has spent a lifetime outside the public eye. Presidents must pore over the thinnest bodies of evidence on these people, trying to discern their convictions and ability from scattered cases and the recommendations of others. Its a risk, when what a president really needs is a sure thing.
President Trump, however, has lucked out. He has a sure thing, battle-tested, ready, and willing to serve: Sen. Mike Lee.

Anti-Trumper Cruz needs to go away and take Little Marco with him!
The campaign is over. It got ugly and it ended. Ted Cruz got bloodies and strayed a bit. But he is a good Senator for Conservatives. Mike Lee is even better.
We need to be careful about eating all of our own. There are only a handful of good conservatives in the Senate, hell in all of Congress for that matter.
We’ve been screwed over by some real turds that the Tea Party movement got elected (then they turned). End of the day, Ted Cruz didn’t do any damage. Trump got elected and things are turning around for this country.
And with that endorsement, Dead Cruz reveals he and Lee are both unfit to sit on the SCOTUS.
Thanks (politically) Dead Cruz.
Hey Lee, “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...”
Just call me a NeverLee kind of guy.
NeverTrumpers, need not apply.
End of story.
Putting aside that Lee was a Never Trumper, if Trump nominated him, that’s one less R vote for the nominee. What is Ted thinking?
No doubt Cruz went off the reservation and got ugly and unsightly during the campaign (and for a bit shortly after). I won’t defend him there.
But, beyond that, he has a solid conservative track record and has been fighting the Establishment GOP as well as liberals pretty hard.
Yes, he’s been fooled a time or two as well. He is good for us in the Senate.
Did Lee even vote for Trump? He said that Trump’s ban was bigoted or unconstitutional during the campaign.
Ted takes credit for many things. Today’s flavor of the day is we wouldn’t have Gorsuch without Ted’s intervention.
Damn folks, do you ever get tired of shoveling B. S.?
Any guy that gets 20 minutes at the Convention and doesn’t endorse the official nominee, is most certainly not a supporter of that man.
What the hell is wrong with your ability to think rationally?
Could he not vote for himself?
Yes, his NeverTrump tirades certainly back that up.
Wow, a more Conservative guy could never be found. Too bad his NeverTrump crap meant Hillary was his choice by default.
Folks, what the hell? He’s a solid Joe? No way!
Ted is solid as long as you don’t want the border secure.
He is an open borders Bush trained globalist wholly owned (to the tune of two million dollars every three years) by Goldman Sachs. Follow the money.
That describes Lee at the Republican Convention to a T.
A lot of you were upset at people who would not Trump it up before the election.
Now you guys can't seem to let go of your biases when it comes to Ted.
Tsk. Tsk.
Well put!
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should Trump remove a Republican Senator from that position.

There are many good candidates.
There will be more openings in the Supreme Court while Trump is still in office, and when we have a higher majority in the Senate, let Lee be nominated.
I am NOT saying Lee isn’t an outstanding candidate.\
I just do NOT wish to jeopardize the Senate majority we have—which is quite slim.
Hillary Clinton was going to be president if Trump lost.
Cruz, Lee, and a number of others really didn’t give a flying ——.
That was the end of their political career for me.
I’ll never support a NeverTrumper for any office.
Entertaining the thought of Hillary Clinton, and what she would do to our nation, simply wasn’t motivation enough for them to do the right thing in the interest of saving our nation.
When the chips are down, people reveal their true colors.
Cruz and Lee => Dumb and Dumber
Thank you for your opinion Mister Haney and be assured it will be given all the consideration it merits.
It’s bad enough nevertrumper Romney will be in the Senate.
Mike Lee on the SC? I think not.
HOW about a no-more Utah.
Cruz, Lee, the Koch Brothers and Golden Sacks are on a desperate mission to stack the SC with a NeverTrumper, then elect another Mitt McCain Romney to fill his seat in the Senate.
NO WAY!
