MCALLEN, Texas Norma Leticia Ulloa Montoya was arrested after rafting across the Rio Grande with her sons and illegally entering the U.S. A day later, she was sent to federal court here, separated from her children, 9 and 6 years old. It was unclear when she would see them again.
Ms. Ulloa joined more than 70 other migrants in a crowded courtroom in this South Texas city, including about a dozen other Central American parents. They faced misdemeanor charges for illegally entering the U.S., an offense that carries a maximum 6-month jail sentence.
If one pleads guilty, does one have a right to stay in this country with their babies? she asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter E. Ormsby through a translator. Judge Ormsby said he didnt know if she or any other migrant in the courtroom could stay in the U.S., or when they might see their children again.
Her question strikes at the heart of a debate that has emerged after the Trump administration adopted a zero-tolerance policy last month to illegal immigration at the border, pursuing criminal charges against offenders, including parents with minor children. The goal is to slow the number of people trying to sneak across.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others in the Trump administration have said federal law requires them to separate children when their parents are being prosecuted and facing jail time. As a result, several hundred children have been separated from their parents who illegally crossed the border and have been placed in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement, according to federal immigration officials.
If people dont want to be separated from their children, they should not bring them with them, Mr. Sessions said last week in an interview

If they’d stayed in their own country instead of illegally crossing into ours they wouldn’t be separated.
Now there you go again...speaking simple logic. It is so obvious, isn’t it? The liberal firestorm over this will be huge, however.
That single question is just loaded with so much 'wrong'.
Deport them all back to the illegal immigrant’s country of origin.
JoMa
Why the heck do invaders face jail time? They should be sent back home, with their children.
And when u geet back to Mehsheethole tell all your friends and neighbors stay home. There’s a new sheriff in town!
Uh-huh. And I am betting she was coached to say that. A 9-year-old and a 6-year-old are not babies.
While costly it serves at a greater deterrent rather than toss them back across the border to try again the next day.
The desire for American freebies is great we have to make fear of capture and consequences Greater.
To be fair, this threat of separation was small under the Obama regime. And, to be sure, a parent may face a Hobson's choice in staying in, say, North Korea vs risking separation. I get it.
But Mexico isn't NK. And Trump has been around for about 18 months. So...The question not being asked is: what does it say about the parents, that they're willing to risk separation from their flesh and blood, in breaking the law?
Ship them home immediately.
Because our borders are still so porous that they can try, try again to cross again with a decent chance of escaping detection and reaching the land of welfare and honey.
If the only penalty for breaking in is removal and a chance to try again, the disincentive isn't strong enough. Ideally, with a strong border (Wall plus patrol), we could do as you suggest.
It’s a problem that they’re in the country. The children are getting a summer camp opportunity that US citizens can only dream of while the haters of US sovereignty are outside protesting. It must be tempting to Central American parents to bring their children here for such a wonderful free of charge opportunity.
They don’t need to be held over to await a judge. BP should be able to deport them on the spot. It should be catch and deport.
They set themselves up as martyrs.
There are no restrictions on the part of the US Government that prevent them from taking their families with them.
Maggots who send their kids to the U.S. as “unaccompanied” SHOULD BE “separated from their children”. They gave up their children when they pushed them across the border “unaccompanied” or turned them over to “coyotes”.
Actually, Mr. Sessions, they SHOULD bring their children, with them when they are deported.
Funny how nobody seems to care about the thousands of American kids of military personnel who are separated from their deployed moms or dads.
I wonder...
Would Alicia A. Caldwell be willing to write a soap opera pity-party story for American Service people who often leave their children at home to fight our wars... And sometimes NEVER see their children again.
Well Alicia how about it?
Will you show us you care about your fellow citizens as much as you ‘care’ about illegals who steal our jobs and commit crimes against all of us?
I didn’t think so...
“........they and their children should be deported promptly.”........
Problem is, they will return ASAP, hoping to avoid being caught once again. This is a never ending problem that will NOT be resolved anytime soon.
