Pope Francis grants indulgences for Dublin participants
BBC News ^ | 3 Jun 18 | Mark McCleary

Participants attending the World Meeting of Families in August can be forgiven their sins or help a relative speed through purgatory.

Pope Francis has granted a "plenary indulgence" for those taking part.

In Catholic doctrine an indulgence frees you from being punished for your previously committed sins or it can be passed on to dead relatives to shorten their time in purgatory.

Even those following events on TV and radio can achieve a partial indulgence as long as they recite the Our Father, the Creed and other devout prayers.

Martin Luther's opposition to the sale of indulgences was one of the main causes of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century.

The Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican body dealing with forgiveness of sins, said pilgrims would have to attend confession and Mass, pray for the Pope's intentions and participate in some function during the five-day event.

The use of indulgences in Catholicism is a tradition that goes back to the Crusades in the 11th Century.

How can a person who understands the terrible price Christ paid with His death, presume He missed payment for some sins?

Assumes that we believe there's some defect in Christ's atonement, which is false -- we don't.

There may be defects in us, however, in our acceptance of that perfect atonement.

Try again.

When the Mass is compared to Hebrews the mass comes up short. If you can’t deal with that......

What Luther objected to was that people were asked to pay money for indulgences.

That doesn’t happen anymore.

If you don't want to read the BBC News article, here are others:

From Belfast (very interesting news article on this very topic, published just yesterday):

Presbyterians challenge Papal indulgences

In that article, a Catholic priests confirms that the Pope has granted 'plenary indulgences' for those who attend his visit this August.

But Catholic priest Fr Patrick McCafferty said they are firmly based on scripture. “Purgatory is simply cleansing and healing after death and it is effected by the grace of God and the Blood of Jesus Christ,” he said. God is “indulgent” towards His children’s weaknesses and the teaching on indulgences is “simply an illustration of His providential care” he added. The Presbyterian Church in Ireland responded that “the only mediator” between God and men is Christ and that “in Him alone is to be found forgiveness of sin through his finished work on the cross”.

Here is an article that confirms that Francis has been granting indulgences since at least 2016:

Is Pope Francis too indulgent with indulgences?

To help fulfill this vision, Francis is also relying on an old-fashioned ritual — indulgences. They are a way of winning remission from penance — in this life or in Purgatory. The most recent example of the pope’s penchant for indulgences was his announcement of a special holy year, or jubilee, dedicated to the theme of mercy and featuring a variety of ways for pilgrims to receive indulgences. So what is an indulgence?....... Explaining it is not a simple feat, and Vatican officials have been known to grow testy when asked. As briefly as possible, it is an “extra-sacramental” means by which a penitent can perform a duty — a pilgrimage or some similar act — to eliminate all or part of the penance they must complete after confessing a sin. An indulgence can also reduce the time spent in Purgatory after one dies, or reduce it for someone else who is already in Purgatory awaiting final entry into heaven. There are both full (plenary) and partial indulgences, and the means for obtaining them can vary. (See Section 1471 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.)

What Luther objected to was that people were asked to pay money for indulgences. That doesn’t happen anymore.

But if you take time off from work, pay for an airline ticket, pay for a hotel, and attend this or that event that Francis has decreed worthy of a 'plenary indulgence' and actually show up in the crowd, then you merit one.

From the Catholic Catechism:

The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.83

CHAPTER TWO, Article 4, Section X, sub-section 1471, line 83

When I was still a Catholic, if you wanted a special Mass for a loved one, the church expected you to contribute to a special collection.

Catholic Answers Forum states that most churches today still expect this fee:

https://forums.catholic.com/t/having-a-mass-said-for-someone/76458

Some say the fee is "suggested" and not required. But even the suggestion of this un-Biblical, as is the entire premise of an indulgence.

It against God's Word.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 20:28

Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

You will continue to compare your caricatured misrepresentations of Catholic doctrines to your misunderstood, mangled, and incomplete understanding of Scripture ... you mean.

Like the ...

... Catholic doctrines about Mary? The mangled, and incomplete understanding of Scripture which has CREATED  ...

... an asexual, frigid Jewish wife; who withheld her favors from Joseph for no rational reason; instead of the beautiful, blessed lady of Scripture!

1 Corinthians 7:1-40 ESV

... each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.

For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does.

Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer;

but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

"Only She Can Help You"
by Father Nicholas Gruner, S.T.L., S.T.D. (Cand.)
In this letter introducing The Fatima Crusader Issue 38, Father Gruner discusses the growing lies and deception about Russia's errors and the consecration of that nation. He also reminds us that, while it is urgent that we be informed about and fight for Our Lady's cause, we must ask for Her help and intercession.

The Rosary
by Father Stefano Manelli, S.T.D.
It is greatly important that Our Lady insisted on the Rosary. When at Fatima She spoke of the salvation of sinners, of the ruin of souls in hell, of wars and peace, and of the future of our age. Our Lady indicated and recommended the Rosary as the prayer that saves, that brings peace, that preserves the faith.

Mary, Our Life, Our Sweetness, Our Hope
by St. Alphonsus de Liguori
St. Alphonsus de Liguori explains how Mary is our life, how She is our sweetness, and how She is our hope.

The historical record of the worship of Mary accumulated by St. Alphonsus de Liguori who wrote “The Glories of Mary” in the year 1745, which has been since translated into English and printed again and again and again with the full affirmation and imprimatur of the official Roman Catholic Church.  In this book there is the sum of all the glories of Mary which has been vouchsafe to the Roman Catholic Church and the Church itself calls upon all its constituents to give Mary that honor she is due.  She is identified as Mary, our Queen; Mary, our mother; Mary, our life; Mary, our sweetness; Mary, our hope; Mary, our help; Mary, our Mediatress; Mary, our advocate; Mary, our guardian; and Mary, our salvation.  It is said that Mary delivers us from hell, Mary delivers us from purgatory, and Mary leads us to heaven.  And it should be said that de Liguori, who collected all the Marion dogma and devotion, was himself one of the most celebrated and revered authorities in the Roman Catholic Church.  De Liguori was himself a cardinal in life, and a saint in death.

Jesus said "Without Me you can do nothing". In this crisis which looms ahead of us, Our Lady has told us that we need Her help, Her intercession. We must ask for Her help with the Rosary and the Scapular.

At Fatima , Our Lady told us very plainly that "Only I can help you". Today more than ever is this so true.

Pray the Rosary and sacrifice yourself for Our Lady.

I urge you to also make some sacrifices as Our Lady of Fatima asked us. For those who are able, do some fasting. If you can, abstain from meat by eating meat only during one meal a day. Try to do this for two days, even ten days or 30 days. Of course we should abstain totally from meat every Friday.

Jesus and Mary — Our Hope

It is so urgent that we reach as many souls as possible before it is too late. Let us be of good cheer and remember the words of Jesus to each of us, "It's never too late to have recourse to Jesus and Mary." That is why it is so important to reach the many millions of souls who do not know this, and who do not know the grave dangers lying in wait for their souls.

No, we must never lose hope. Mary is our hope. She can obtain for us what we cannot by ourselves. Read what St. Alphonsus has to say regarding confidence in Our Lady's intercession in "Mary Leads Her Servants to Heaven". Father Manelli also reminds us of the importance of devotion to Our Lady. (See "Hail Mary, Full of Grace"). Our Blessed Mother tells us to turn to Her in confidence. She tells us repeatedly to ask Her intercession through the frequent fervent praying of the Rosary. (See "The Rosary"). She tells us we must pray the Rosary every day. She wants us to pray it many times a day.

"Blessed is he whose interior offers the Blessed Virgin Mary a place of repose." Devotion towards the Blessed Virgin remains in all who are the inheritance of Our Lord; that is to say, in all who will praise Him eternally in Heaven.

O, how many blessed souls are now in Heaven who would never have been there had not Mary, by Her powerful intercession, led them thither. I made that in the heavens there should rise light that never faileth. Cardinal Hugo, in his commentary on the above text of Ecclesiasticus, says in the name of Mary, "I have caused as many saints in Heaven through Her intercession, who would never have been there but through Her ."

...in the words of St. Ambrose, "Open to us, O Mary, the gates of paradise, since Thou hast its keys." "Aperi nobis, O Virgo coelum, cujus claves habes." Nay more, the Church says, that "Thou art its gate."

St. Antoninus tells us "that this divine Mother has already, by Her assistance and prayers, obtained Heaven for us, provided we put no obstacle in the way."23 Hence, says Abbot Guerric, "he who serves Mary, and for whom She intercedes, is as certain of Heaven as if he was already there."24 St. John Damascene also says, "that to serve Mary and be Her courtier is the greatest honor we can possibly possess; for to serve the Queen of Heaven is already to reign there, and live under Her commands is more than to govern."25 On the other hand, he adds, "that those who do not serve Mary will not be saved; for those who are deprived of the help of this great Mother are also deprived of that of Her Son and of the whole court of heaven."26

 23.  "Coeleste nobis regnum, suo interventu auxiliis, et precibus, impetravit."—Paciucch. Sup. Salve Reg. exc. I.
 24. "Qui Virgini famulatur, ita securus est de paradiso, ac si esset in paradiso."
 25. "Summus honor, servire Mariæ, et de ejus esse familia; etenim ei servire, regnare est; et ejus agi frænis, summa libertas."
 26. "Gens quæ non servierit illi, peribit; gentes destitutæ tantæ Matris auxilio, destituuntur auxilio Filii et totius curi’‘ coelestis."— De Laud. B. M. I. 4.

Acts 15    Version 1.6

The Council at Fresno...
1 Certain Catholics came from all across the world to FreeRepublic and were trying to convince the believers: "Unless you are Catechized, according to the custom taught by Rome, you cannot be saved." 2 This brought Elsie and Metmom ETAL into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Elsie and Metmom were appointed, along with some other believers, to lurk on FR to see the  Catholics and NON about this question. 3 The Holy Spirit sent them on their way, and as they traveled through the Religion Forum, they told how the NON-Catholics had been converted. This news made all the Protestants very glad. 4 When they came to FR, they were scorned by members of the ONE TRUE church, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Catholics stood up and said, "The Protestants must be baptisted correctly and required to keep the laws of Rome!"

6 The posters met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Metmom got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Protestants might hear from our fingers the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Protestants a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."

12 The whole of FR became silent (Yeah; THAT's gonna happen!) as they listened to Elsie and Metmom telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Protestants. 13 When they finished, Boatbums spoke up. "Brothers," she said, "listen to me. 14 MGinTN has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 "'After this I will return
   and rebuild Rome's fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
   and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
even all the Protestants who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things'
18 things known from long ago.

19 "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Protestants who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from vision and apparations, from Brown Scapulas, from the endless repetitions of the ROSARY and from so-called blood. 21 For the laws of Rome has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the sanctuaries on every Sunday."

The Council's Letter to Gentile Believers
22 Then the posters and lurkers, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Fresno with Mark17 and Tennessee Nana. They chose Daniel1212 (called Wise) and eagleone, and Luircin,  Mark17;  as well as aMorePerfectUnion; folks who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

The apostles and elders, your brothers,

To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:

   Greetings.

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things.

   Farewell.

30 So the men were sent off and continued to post on FR, where they gathered the people together and delivered the GOSPEL. 31 The people (most all  except ebb tide, piusv, Salvation; Steelfish;  Mrs. Don-o and Vlademir998) read it and were glad for its encouraging message.

 1 ELSIE 17:1-10

1 Now the Catholics gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at FreeRepublic, which belongs to Jim; they encamped EVERYWHERE, in Rome and all her outposts.  2 And them Prots and the men of Wittenberg were gathered together, and they encamped in the pages of FR, and drew up in battle array against the Catholics.  3 The Catholics stood on Rome's teachings on one side, and Prots stood on Biblical truth on the other side, with a great rift between them.

4 And a champion(?) went out from the camp of the Catholics, named Vlad, from The Land of Whining, whose height was probably similar to Lord Farquaad.  5 He had a Brown Scapula around his neck, and he was armed with all sorts of Sacrements, and the weight of the Sacrements was quite burdensome.  6 And he had bronze armor on his legs (to protect from Prot ankle biters) and a loop of beads between his fingers.  7 Now the beads were to remind him of many teachings, and his iron spearhead; though a bit rusty; was to prod the Prots with - if one of them ever DARED to get near - and Mother of Mercy went before him.

8 Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Luther, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Catholic, and you the servants of just words on paper? Choose a man (or a woman named cow) for yourselves, and let him (spit!) come down to me.  9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”  10 And the Catholic said, “I defy the armies of LUTHER this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”

A few weeks ago, Francis declared that there was no Hell.

But, there is such a thing as "Purgatory"?

Why this dichotomy?

My guess is that Francis finds it useful to lord 'purgatory' over people, so that he can meet our 'plenary indulgences' for them or their dead friends and relatives.

Pope Francis; leader of the Catholic Church...

...except for a few ANTI-POPES on FR; who; evidently; know SO much more than HE does!!

They have publically published words saying; to the effect: "He is not MY pope!"; thereby setting themSELVES up as their OWN pope (I guess).
