‘I can’t afford an apartment’: Congressmen sleeping in offices cry poverty

WASHINGTON — These Congress members are sleeping on the job — and defending their right to do it.

Crying poverty amid decade-long stagnant salaries and Washington’s steep cost of living, an increasing number of House lawmakers have turned into professional squatters at night, hitting the sack in their Capitol Hill offices — on everything from cots in closets to futons stashed behind constituent couches — to save a few bucks during the work week.

“Washington is too expensive,” said Rep. Dan Donovan (R-SI), who credits the cot that he sleeps on in a tiny alcove in his office as the reason he is able to serve in Congress while still paying his New York City housing costs.

“If we go to the point where you have to rent or have to buy [in DC], then only millionaires would be members of Congress,’’ he said. “I don’t think that was the intent of our Founding Fathers.”

But some of the penny-pinching pols’ colleagues are disgusted by what they call an unsanitary, undignified practice and want it banned.

Boo f’ing hoo.

I’m all for the construction of a Congressional Dormitory in a cheaper area of DC, or in northern VA. They will have a safe building, private bathrooms (equivalent to the average in the nation), a small kitchen, and a cable hook-up. Oh, and their salaries get cut by $25,000/year to pay for it.

Don’t like it? Then retire, @sswipes.

They are making a decent wage for a decent town in America. But in DC, one of the highest priced places in the country, while maintaining the family back home, impossible.

They have a legitimate point. DC and the surrounding suburbs are ridiculously expensive. Especially for younger members who are paying a mortgage in their home districts. The members complaining about that are all Democrat members of the Black Caucus, which means they’re all on the take and find rent in the city to be nothing more than chump change.

Staten Island, one of the 5 boroughs of NYC. Remember, this was written by the NY Post, so “everyone knows” what SI means.

Easy solution.

Let’s have a Congressional apartment building, paid for by us taxpayers, for them to live in. It might even be like a college dorm with food service available. But let’s provide them a place to.live, if some of them really can’t afford Washington housing costs.

And deduct rent from their Congressional paychecks every payday.

Yes, and considering the potential clients/renters, you would think that a hotel or motel or apartment management company in the area would come up with some viable and affordable solutions, if there was a way to make a profit on the deal.

So some of these guys bunk up with other congressmen, or sleep in their offices.

Of course, some of them get discounted apartments from lobbyists, or are independently wealthy, so some of them don’t have that problem.

They would be for it too. But there are NO cheaper parts of the city or the VA suburbs. Overpaid bureaucrats can afford a house or an apartment because they only have to maintain one residence and they're waaaaay overpaid.

I like your plan. Seems like reasonable solution. Just so it is NOT run by the government.

I’m sympathetic, but more sympathetic to their staff.

Do staff members sleep in the offices used by the House and Senate also?

Washington D.C. is indeed an expensive place to live.
