After using her parents credit card to rent a house in which to throw a wild party, a Canadian 14-year-old is in major trouble $20,000 worth, actually. Thats the amount of damage the teens caused, and which her parents must now pay.
Last week, police responded to a call that reported an uncontrolled party at a neighborhood home in West Vancouver, where nearly 200 teens were seen flooding out once officials arrived, according to CTV News. Left in their wake was a house with much destruction to walls, furniture, and artwork, all of which her parents will be held accountable for.
According to the police report, the young girl responsible for the event had used her parents credit card without their permission. But the parents will still have to find a way to pay.

She used her parents’ CC and probably filled out an online application.
“And yet there was surely a physical meeting where someone handed over a key?”
The past three times I went on vacation and rented a house, the key was “hidden” under a placemat or in one of those fake rock things.
Some people that own houses they rent in tourist areas may never set foot in them. They’ll hire a service to clean the home before/after the visitors arrive/leave and put the key where it needs to be prior to arrival.
I’m sure things are OK 99.9% of the time ... it’s that 0.1% that’ll make you regret employing such a nonchalant attitude with your rental property :-).
No.
And since juveniles are no longer held responsible for anything - they are trying to put the parents on the $$$ hook instead, it would appear.
It won’t work. Someone steals my credit account information does not make me liable. Or up to $50 (maybe). Too bad so sad.
Nobody should rent property in such a way that this could happen. They learned a harsh lesson.
Maybe not. Some places have electronic keys like at hotels. They may have mailed her a card. Or the lock could have a keypad that can be changed.
Sometimes, you just gotta say, what the f#ck!
At least she should get into Princeton.
Mixed liability.
What a mess.
Parents are responsible for damage their children cause. I’m guessing the girl rented the place on a site like airbnb and input her parents info as well as their credit card #. At some places, they just give you a key code that’s good for however long you’re renting the place. Or she could have had an older teen meet the landlord. In any case, IMO, the parents are responsible for their child’s actions. If there are specific people who cause the major damage, there is likely phone evidence of it and the parents can go after the parents of those kids in court.
I bet it was all done online.
If they are saying parents are responsible for damages because they are responsible for their children that is one thing. If they are saying the parents are responsible because their credit card was used- as if the parents rented the property, that is another. If she did not have the parents permission to use their card, then if some random person steals your credit card and does this- would you be responsible?
This article doesn’t make sense.
I'd pay it directly out of her college fund - plus tax penalties.
Can a 14 year old enter into a legally binding contract to rent real estate??Not in this country absent a long involved process called "emancipation" which requires convincing a judge that the 14 year-old is astronomically competent while the parents are awful. Plus that it be in the 14 year-old's best interests, which is really difficult at 14. It happens much more frequently at ages 16-17.
Here the renter has serious legal liability problems for negligence, particularly if anyone is injured or killed
That is the thing. Did she steal it or had she been given permission to use it previously? If they had given her permission previously, they might lose buyer protection. I was going to let my son use my card once and asked the CC company and was told if he were to use it, then I was liable any time he did, even without permission. I decided not to let him.
I have rented places on-line and even had a key mailed to me once! Another time, it was a lock box. I think I met an owner one time. My card always had a temporary charge on it when I signed the contract on-line. Wonder if her parents had something like that on theirs? I also get notification via email and text if there is a charge over a given amount.
No college fund for that kid.
Though she could market herself as an experience organizer and make big bucks organizing parties for folks one day. She has a flying start!
Mmmm, my reply was veered towards the credit card issue but, I realized that is not the case. The parents are being held liable for the damage, not a credit card charge, right? I mean, yes, they should pay the CC but the damages are probably a separate issue. She destroyed property. Her parents are responsible. If it had been a vacant property and she invited people, and there was damage, they would have to deal with it. Yes, there might be an additional charge or two, but the bottom line is, she is a minor and they need to deal with the aftermath and her. I do agree that the other partiers should have to pay, as well.
Kid takes credit card from parents without their knowledge, rents house using said card without their knowledge, and holds party in said house without their knowledge and the parents are going to be held responsible for the damages? Parents would absolutely not be liable for the damages in the US. The idiot who rented the house to a minor (who is unable to legally enter into a lease or any other contract) using someone else’s credit card would have to eat it.
I bet word of the party spread over social media. She probably never expected that many to show.
I have an idea how it went down:
“Three hours of massage time , twelve in-room movies, five shoe shines and four hundred dollars worth of snacks. Not to mention the damage to the room.”
“You don’t understand ...my my friend had fleas. I ran into the gas , it could have killed me, and my, my other friend couldn’t taste his peaches, they’re only good for two weeks.”
“I think you’ve read one too many Billy Mumphrey stories. Good day Miss Benes.”
“Okay...Good day..”
I’d beat the living crap out of her. Some would call it abuse.
Honey, you’re not going to college any more. It’s an army enlistment for you.
