Maybe not. Some places have electronic keys like at hotels. They may have mailed her a card. Or the lock could have a keypad that can be changed.

Parents are responsible for damage their children cause. I’m guessing the girl rented the place on a site like airbnb and input her parents info as well as their credit card #. At some places, they just give you a key code that’s good for however long you’re renting the place. Or she could have had an older teen meet the landlord. In any case, IMO, the parents are responsible for their child’s actions. If there are specific people who cause the major damage, there is likely phone evidence of it and the parents can go after the parents of those kids in court.
