Americans love their cars. The United States has one of the highest car ownership rates per capita in the world. We're a mobile culture and we like it that way. But a tax-per-mile plan being pushed by Republican Rep. Sam Graves of Missouri might have drivers re-thinking those weekend joyrides instead of feeling all the pain at the pump.

Ridiculous! The folks who drive the most already pay the most tax because they use the most gas. Putting a tax on mileage is only a way to double tax us. They will keep the gas tax too, bank on it.

Youre going to put a GPS thing in my car and track my every motion? Now you're getting the idea.

“”””The thing is: the state will require transponders on your car that monitor not only how many miles you drive but where you drove and what speed you drove and it ties into the state patrol. Its all for safety and the children.”””””
That is the goal. Many cars already have the “black box”.

But that’s only for toll paying.

Missouris DOT is part of the problem.
Gas tax money that should go to roads is diverted to bike paths, airport approaches and other popular endeavors. It is that way in every state and the problem is the politicians would divert even more money to all that worthless garbage than ever before then just keep increasing the mileage tax.

How about all federal and state inmates in the prisons keep up the maintenance of all highways, thereby reducing the cost?
They get shot on sight attempting escape.

Any republican that ever suggests any new or raised tax should be run out of town on a rail.

Not going to happen as there are still too many cars that do not have GPS tracking capabilities. Besides that, it is much easier to collect the taxes at the point of sale. If bills are sent out then it adds extra costs and may result in some not paying in a timely manner.
Some who drive less than others are still paying less in taxes because they use less gas. It's a dumb idea that has been bantered around for years now.

Or a tax per kilowatt hour for charging batteries and a tax for battery disposal when batteries replace (like they charge when you replace your car battery).

Bingo! Rural folk have to drive farther to shop, work etc. Agenda 21. We’re easier to control in cities.

Great idea!
Why should “Electric Vehicles” get a free ride?
And why should “Hybrids” get a partially free ride?
