Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has announced a deal with Senate Democrats to fund the government and set spending levels for defense and nondefense programs over the next two years.
The legislation would avert a government shutdown on Friday, when federal funding is due to expire, and boost defense and nondefense programs.
It also lifts the debt ceiling to March 2019, which White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hailed as a decision that would move Congress away from "crisis-to-crisis budgeting."
The deal is backed by McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and will almost certainly be cleared as part of a stopgap funding measure by the Senate before a Feb. 8 deadline to prevent a shutdown.
It is not entirely sure the package will win enough support to pass the House, however.
It does not include language sheltering thousands of immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children who could face deportation next month.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she will oppose the deal without a commitment from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to consider legislation to protect "Dreamers" and other immigrants facing possible deportation next month.
Pelosi was in the midst of a floor speech running more than three hours in the House when McConnell announced the deal. McConnell has promised a floor debate on immigration in the Senate.
Without a commitment from Speaker Ryan, comparable to the commitment from Leader McConnell, this package does not have my support, Pelosi said in a statement.
Ryan is also likely to face defections from conservatives who oppose the Senate bill for various reasons. The more Republican votes he loses, the more leverage Pelosi has.

Republicans fall into the same trap the Dems used on Reagan. Increase revenue by lowering taxes encouraging more labor. Then spend more so government goes further into debt. Then the Dems will say tax cuts don’t work.
If DJT goes along with this, he will have broken a major campaign promise: a 20% cut in federal spending. I was watching the night he said it-—it was either one of the primary debates or a rally.
So, Mr. President, what happened to the 20% cut and why am I the only person who seems to have remembered this ??

Neither party can use the fiscal concern tactic for political purposes EVER AGAIN!
STOP SPENDING MORE MONEY THAN YOU MAKE! This is Finance 101!!
>
Problem is, govt doesn’t MAKE *any* $$$; it STEALS that which it spends (I’d say TAX, but that only applies to outlays that are supported by the Constitution).
2nd good thing: The (R)N(C) will have to come up w/ another ‘motto’. They done blown the ‘small govt’ party right OUT of the water.

Sorry, just another excuse: willfully blind\ignorant, in cahoots a/o too stupid to learn from the past.
Any way, they should *never* be in office, let alone given the pen & checkbook.
It did. House passed theirs yesterday. Senate will bring these ideas to conference committee with house
I believe that applies only to bills raising revenue. See Article I, Section 7.
This is a theft of assets from our children and grand children. It is absolutely outrageous!! When doe3s this system of printing money just collapse. It will be a night mare when it does resulting in millions of deaths and devastation. This is irresponsible. Those responsible include anyone voting for this !!
I don’t think it’ll happen. Schumer is facing the shutdown with a much cleaner appearance than before; letting Nancy and his bet on the Freedom caucus to carry his water. Guy’s a good poker player. The deal is a bluff.
The deal is a joke.
Ryan promised to return to regular order, which I thought meant splitting the various appropriations as was done in the past. The current process invites the D trash to play games. Maybe that is why Ryan does it?
Ryan’s wife is from a big time Dem family.
Ryan is just continuing the tradition.
Right, I had heard. Point being, we could potentially get the spending cuts that Trump campaigned on, were Ryan to stop handicapping the process in favor of the guns and butter status quo.
I do understand that our military equipment is probably beat up from the various ME escapades.
What I would like to see is an income tax surtax imposed on districts whose Reps routinely vote for spending increases. Maybe after a while, the 10% surtax would induce a change in voting habits. Or...have folks check off all the unconstitutional social programs they support. Let them pay for them. Let’s un-socialize socialism.
If Trump signs a two-year budget bill with no serious wall funding, then "MAGA" becomes a confirmed scam.
McTrurtle can stick it up his rear. No wall, no peace. NO DEAL!
A New Congress can change anything from the previous one. There is not even one entire year left to this congress
The only thing I “attack” is bullschiff artists and ignoramuses who think they know more than they do.
How people get the idea that we will get all we want in these bills, I’ll never know. It is indicative of the failure of conservatives to get what they want. Fortunately President Trump CAN get what he wants not just talk about it.
If you have so much knowledge of my activities you must have missed the fact that I was one of the first and most adamant supporters of the President on this site.
Or a New Deal.
Wall?
THIS. DEAL. SUCKS.
“Provide between $80 billion and $90 billion in disaster relief for communities hit by hurricanes and wildfires.”
Where exactly do these monies go?
Is this a way to “reimburse” insurance companies for their “losses”?
Why are taxpayers funding disaster relief for “Acts of God”?
Inquiring minds want to know.
