WASHINGTON As lawmakers recover from a dispiriting government shutdown and prepare for President Trumps State of the Union address on Tuesday, Capitol Hill is absorbed with concern that Mr. Trumps presidency has pushed an already dysfunctional Congress into a near-permanent state of gridlock that threatens to diminish American democracy itself.
The sense of gloom is bipartisan. A group of Republicans in the House and the Senate are warning of a secret plot in the F.B.I. to overthrow the Trump government. Democrats speak of corruption and creeping authoritarianism, unchecked by a Congress that has turned into an adjunct of the executive.
And few lawmakers can muster a word of pride in their institution.
The Senate has literally forgotten how to function, said Senator Angus King, independent of Maine. Were like a high school football team that hasnt won a game in five years. Weve forgotten how to win.
Senator Ben Sasse, Republican of Nebraska, is no more sanguine. Congress is weaker than it has been in decades, the Senate isnt tackling our great national problems, and this has little to do with who sits in the Oval Office, he said. Both parties Republicans and Democrats are obsessed with political survival and incumbency.

Hopefully. Democracy is a cancer.
For better or for worse, unlike a Parliament, gridlock is designed into our government. Blame the founders, if you must.
NYT, you’ll see what’s at risk should you slimes drive Trump out of office.
Quite right. They'd better be careful what they ask for.
I’d rather they pass no legislation than bad legislation. We’ve had quite enough of that.
Gridlock To the NYT’s means that Deep state Democrats are not getting their way. Trump is playing them like a fiddle. They are getting really worried. NYT’s is under marching orders to ATTACK. Article after Article today.
Another hit-piece against President Trump.
After winning control of the White House in 2016 while maintaining control of both houses of Congress, the GOP destroyed its credibility when we arrived in January 2018 and ObamaCare is still the law of the land ... just to name one example.
After 8 years of obummer, is this REALLY a serious article or are you pulling one on us, Unum? :)
Ah, poor widdle lawmakers. Three days (over a weekend even) was SO dispiriting. I'm sure they were heartbroken. /sarc/
Now the NY Slimes are trying to blame Trump for what has been a dysfunctional congress for many years now. Gridlock in DC was happening way before Trump showed up.
But now, to find something else to blame Trump for, that "gridlock has deepen". Poppycock.
If we had the libtards utopian democracy, the country would be run by California and NYC and most likely be headed to a civil war and union dissolved.
Is our demo... establishment at risk? Uh, yep.
Best news yet. If both parties are unhappy the winner has to be the American people.
And what is wrong with gridlock in DC?
Gridlock is absolutely a problem when it prevents a political party from living up to its own campaign promises.
The growing evidence of a deep state shadow government shows our Republic is in danger.
That may eventuate, anyway.
So long as there is a breathing employee of the Old Gray Whore, the American Republic is at risk
