The Justice Department on Wednesday threatened to subpoena 23 jurisdictions across the country if they dont turn over information about their sanctuary city policies toward illegal immigrants.
In letters to New York City, Chicago, San Francisco and other jurisdictions, the Justice Department demanded records relating to whether these localities are "unlawfully restricting information sharing by law enforcement officers with federal immigration authorities."
I continue to urge all jurisdictions under review to reconsider policies that place the safety of their communities and their residents at risk, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. Protecting criminal aliens from federal immigration authorities defies common sense and undermines the rule of law.
The letter apparently drew a fiery response from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who tweeted Wednesday that he would boycott a meeting at the White House over the DOJs actions.
I will NOT be attending todays meeting at the White House after @realDonaldTrumps Department of Justice decided to renew their racist assault on our immigrant communities, de Blasio tweeted. It doesnt make us safer and it violates Americas core values.
The letters state that jurisdictions that fail to respond will be subject to a DOJ subpoena.
Sanctuary cities is a phrase typically used to describe jurisdictions that restrict local law enforcement from sharing information with the federal government about the immigration status of those in custody.

They need to add Fairfax County, Virginia, to the list so they’ll have an even two-dozen.
Justice Department continues crackdown on ‘sanctuary’ cities
Stop talking anout it and do it and whole you’re at arrest sanctuary city officials for interfering with federal investigations.
Why not? It worked for Barack Obama.
Wow! DemocRATS against the rule of law. Who would have ever thought that?/S
Big whoop. Get back to me when you start frog marching these sanctuary city mayors and governors out of their offices.
Why threaten?
Why not do it?
Enough with the threats/talk
“President Trump might be able to tweet whatever comes to mind, but he can’t grant himself new authority because he feels like it,” San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said in November...
.
.
.
It’s not new authority. It’s you that is trying to grant yourself a new authority.
Idiot doesn’t even understand our US Constitution.
More show with no go.
Arrests of city government officials for conspiracy to violate US immigration law is i order.
A serious threat would be warning the State of California that it will be declared in a state of rebellion.
The administration should instruct the Department of State to stop issuing visas for foreigners heading for “sanctuary” jurisdictions. If cities and states refuse to play their part in the immigration system, they cannot be trusted with additional foreign nationals. So:
No more student visas for UT, Austin, SUNY NY, or any California univ.
No H-1B temp worker visas for California companies. Suck it Silicon valley.
Hit the seditious cities and states in the pocketbook.
The first shot in Civil War II?
No threats.
Do - or do not.
Indeed talk is cheap.
DeBlasio is such a punk. What’s up with NYC. Are they a foreign country now? They disgruntle me.
The public warning serves two purposes.
It lets the jurisdictions know what’s coming if they don’t shape up.
It also puts the public on notice that the actions of these municipalities are illegal, and action will be taken shortly to bring them into compliance.
Both are worthwhile goals. Warnings should go out first, before the heavy lifting starts.

They are and it should be acknowledged.
