Today, as you read this, my website Right Wing News is shutting down operations. It has been around since 2001, but became massive a few years ago because of Facebook.
Remember the mainstream media liberals going out of their minds because the Russians reached almost 150 million people with their $100,000 Facebook ad buy? In July of 2015, in just a week, the Right Wing News Facebook page reached 133 million people. Because conservatives were sharing content they were interested in, little ol Right Wing News (well, I guess nearly 3.6 million Facebook likes isnt so little) was driving the same amount of web traffic as some of the biggest newspapers in America. Barack Obamas Facebook page was 36 times bigger than our page; yet we had 7 times as many people talking about our content.
Ironically, thats a big part of what killed the website.
You see, what Facebook giveth, Facebook can take away. So, why would Facebook want to kill extremely successful Facebook pages that its users enjoyed?
One of the reasons goes back to something I told multiple reporters during the 2016 election. I believe that all of the thriving right wing Facebook pages activated large numbers of what I like to think of as instinctive conservatives. You know, the sort of people who love God, guns and America, but who dont follow politics day to day, read National Review or consume any of Milton Friedmans books. From what I could see on Facebook, that group of people LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Donald Trump and I believe they were responsible for getting him the GOP nomination and probably even got him over the hump in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. I think the liberals that run Facebook came to that same conclusion.
Before the election season got into full swing, Facebook had already made some mild downgrades to reach. Afterwards, when liberal mainstream media outlets were screaming about Russian ad buys and fake news, Facebook systematically, methodically reduced the reach of all its pages with each algorithm change. By then, most of us understood where it was going long-term. If Facebook killed every conservative page overnight, there would be a huge outcry. On the other hand, if Facebook slowly strangled us to death, wed fade away and would people even notice?
Yes, non-political pages were affected, too, although conservative pages got it worse and, yes, there is a business incentive to do this. When people click on a news story, they leave Facebook. On the other hand, conservative pages like Right Wing News were able to become so massive because we are putting out content an awful lot of people on Facebook want to read. Thats no longer going to be allowed in part because were putting out a message that the liberals who run the company dont want out there.
In addition to that, as someone who has been working for a living in this business since 2005, let me drop a little truth bomb on you. We are now in a very oversaturated, corporation-dominated media environment. If you dont already have a legacy website that captured traffic years ago and held onto it, huge traffic you can bring in from elsewhere, or millions of dollars to spend, your chances of getting a political website off the ground today are infinitesimal.
That gets to the heart of the biggest problem conservatives dont realize that they have.
Social media IS the new public square. Its the place you go when you want to reach out and find an audience.
.Except Facebook has for all intents and purposes announced that its killing off pages. So much for having a conservative voice there.
As James OKeefe just revealed in his latest sting, Twitter felt comfortable banning pro-Trump accounts and one of his unwitting sources said, Yeah you look for Trump, or America, and you have like five thousand keywords to describe a redneck. Then you look and parse all the messages, all the pictures, and then you look for stuff that matches that stuff. Charles Johnson, whos a conservative gadfly, is currently suing Twitter because it admitted that he didnt violate Twitters policies; Twitter just wanted to get rid of him. Its good to know that if youre conservative, you can spend years building up an audience on Twitter and the liberals at Twitter can arbitrarily throw you off their service because they decide they dont like your views.
Speaking of building up an audience on a platform for years and then getting screwed, YouTube is also doing that to conservatives. YouTube arbitrarily decided that many conservative videos should be demonetized. Yes, there were profane or gross liberals demonetized as well, but just presenting a conservative point of view was enough to have YouTube cut people off. Dennis Pragers PragerU is suing YouTube for exactly that reason. Just to give you an example of the sort of content YouTube thinks is over-the-line, here are some of the videos it demonetized: Why America Must Lead, The Ten Commandments: Do Not Murder, Why Did America Fight the Korean War, and The Worlds Most Persecuted Minority: Christians. Of course, YouTube would claim that its not censoring the videos because it didnt take them down. However, people are not going to spend large amounts of time and money putting together high-production-value videos if theyre not going to be allowed to make money on those videos because of their political beliefs.
Furthermore, YouTubes radically liberal parent company Google is being sued by James Damore for targeting white men and conservatives. Incidentally, Damore was fired from Google after he wrote an internal memo for other employees to read (something that is common at Google) called, Googles Ideological Echo Chamber: How bias clouds our thinking about diversity and inclusion. Dont kid yourself because if you are conservative, diversity and inclusion dont include you. If you want a more concrete example of that besides its heavily biased search engine which pretty clearly prefers liberal sources over conservative ones, the latest controversy with Google is that if you search for many prominent conservative websites, it has a fact checking section next to them while many sketchy liberal websites dont.
Many of these companies effectively became monopolies because they worked hard to serve ALL of their users. Now that they completely dominate their spaces in the marketplace, their liberal political views are impacting their services. As Robert Conquest once said, Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing and that is a much bigger threat than most conservatives realize.
Its easy to say, Build your own social media website and compete with them, but were talking about companies with billions of dollars and monopolistic control of their markets. The obvious solution would be to break these companies up or to at least acknowledge their importance to modern society and regulate them heavily, but conservatives dont seem to be interested enough in either solution to even THREATEN to do this.
Weve already lost the schools, Hollywood and the mainstream media. What happens when you cant get out conservative opinion via social media because they block, shadow ban and demonetize everyone who gets any traction? What happens if they put rules in place that essentially make expressing conservative opinions something that gets you kicked off their service? Youre pro-gun? Sorry, not allowed. You dont like gay marriage? Get out of here. Criticizing Black Lives Matter? Out of bounds! We can hope for the best, but that seems like the future were headed toward and its one that will leave conservatism weaker than ever.
I have a very large family, and many friends. I use Facebook to keep in touch with them, spread all across the United States, mostly. I DON’T use FB for my political news, relying on online websites and television news I trust on both sides of the issues.
I don’t believe that social media sites, Facebook, but especially Twitter, reflect the views of many people in America. Twitter, for one, seems to be a place where the perpetually outrageously outraged (!!11!) spit and fume about things of which I hear little from the IRL people with whom I interact.
My wife is on Facebook, so that’s my excuse ... if there’s anything I need to know, she’ll tell me.
Beyond that, its attraction is a mystery to me.
No one needs to or should rely on Facebook for news.
They would not have anywhere near the wealth and power they enjoy had they been born into the mind numbing oppression of Cuba or the chaos of Venezuela.
This is true.
I used to be able to search Free Republic via google and find the phrase or post I wanted to reference.
Google no longer indexes FR posts.
Except for a couple of pages, it has disappeared from the search engines.
...”Please explain to me why Facebook is so powerful. I really do not understand.”...
I realized a couple of years ago what FB was doing and how it was luring the naive into it’s net. I disabled my account upon being hacked for the third time after putting in all the available safeguards. Of course, when active, I entered into FB political discussions with friends from my traditional and conservative point of view. When I alerted my friends that I was disabling my account, one told me he had done his own research with his more than 400 friends and discovered that his conservative posts never reached them, and guessed that it was the same with mine. I suspect he was right. Mr. Zuckerberg is the 4th richest person on the earth and is very young to be so successful, solely, because of the appeal of FB. Needless to say, he has to understand the power he holds to manipulate the kind of information out there which has the best chance to reach the eyes of his FB users. The ads are powerful, as well. Someone has said that, “in every progressive is a dictator trying to get out.” If it is the goal of FB, Google and Yahoo or whomever else is richer than most nations, to form and shape this world into their image, they can do it largely through censorship. Most of us fear terrorism, nuclear war, an Electromagnetic Pulse, illness or disease, or violence against us in some other way. However, for me, I fear FB, Google, and, to some extent, Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world. He owns Amazon which I love. What I do not love is his purchase of the Washington Post in his effort to do the same thing FB and Google are doing, through unfair propagandistic news reporting. Out here in the land of real people, most of whom feel that they are sure which gender they are, will be found much naivete and lack of understanding about the #1 danger to us, which, in my view, is the monopoly of big tech to take over and ruin our freedom, our lives and the hope of the future and humanity for a long, long time to come. One more thing about FB. The years I tried to keep up with it showed me one of the charms about it for some heavy users. It was simply a way to rewrite one’s own history. I saw this over and over again just from the postings and photos of the people I personally knew. It was a way to be one’s own publicist. I do not like big government, but just as in the monopoly of Standard Oil in the old, old days, the dangerous tech monopolies need to be broken up. Another thing which makes us pause when we hear of Zuckerberg’s political views is this..Why has he built himself such a high wall and fortress around his home, to live behind? Is he for or against a wall to protect our nation which is our home or does cheap labor and Democrat votes “trump” that idea? Just wondering.
And we just gave them a tax cut from 35% to 21% and stuck the tab to individual Americans.
I have removed myself from Facebook and Twitter. Why should I produce content for people who want me dead?
If it were an even playing field, I would engage. But it is not.
So, here I am. Pockets stuffed with money and looking for somebody who will play it straight. Who will take my money?
Yes, facebook is a chainmail system, akin to ponzy scheme networking machine
nope, dude, you are wrong. The power of Facebook is that millions of people start looking for others by name on Facebook, find them, connect with them and then, if its a business, find their contact information, website and location with it
leftist fascism bump
I don’t feel destroyed Republicans are finally doing what we demand of them and Trump will be the oldest man elected to the presidency in 2020 so what’s the point here?
>>Leftists have made social media such a vile cesspool since Trump won. Why would any conservative with a life to live want to swim in that?
Because a percentage of Democrats are Progressives and their lies must be countered. Another percentage of Democrats are actual Liberals, but not ideological Progressives, and they need to hear the truth from Conservatives.
When your only contact with online Realpolitik is FR, you only get a small part of the picture.
Don’t think of it as “swimming in a cesspool”. Think of it as reaching in with a hook to rescue things.
MUST READ article.
Low-information people use Facebook the way some of us use Free Republic (for news and discussion); there are a lot of them, and they are low-information. If Facebook had 10,000 users it would be a non-issue; it is a primary news source (under the guise of social networking) for many people.
“DemocRATS will NEVER leave elections in the hands of the voters again, after Trump won!”
They know he won because of the relative freedom of the internet, and are focused on removing that obstacle to their complete control of the media.
Hmmm. Just tried it. Works for me.

‘My guess is that most Facebook users are airhead women who exchange cat pictures with their friends.’
exactly so, though I must admit to being a tabbyphile, and like all pictures of cats...but yes, fuzzythinking women dominate FB, and are extremely vocal and jugdgmental, leading to what I call ‘Facebook nation’, where an echo chamber of ‘correct thought’ predominates, and hatreds and contentions are fostered where they don’t need to be...
