After Hatch leaves office, and should the republicans retain the Senate majority, Thad Cochran will be senior-most republican senator, and will likely be made President Pro-Tempore, third in line for the Presidency.
This is likely why there's been talk of his retirement as well.
After Cochran, next in seniority is Charles Grassley of Iowa, elected in the Reagan landslide.
We really need for all congresscritters to retire at 67 years old.
That piece of filth is in office precisely because of Mitch McConnell’s treachery and treason.
Term limits: 12 years and out and no defined benefit plan - 401k and NO continuation of any healthcare benefits.
When was the last time that doddering old fool was even seen in public?
We certainly should make retirement mandatory at 75,for all government jobs, including the SCOTUS, as is required of the pope.
Animal Farm.
The Pope doesn’t retire at 75 ...
While it is customary for the senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service to be elected by the Senate as president pro tempore (or, "president for a time") in the case of the Vice President being absent.
So it doesn't have to be him if the Senate chooses someone else.
The most important thing is TERM LIMITS! Many of these guys have simply been reelected time and time again because they havent been really bad, their parties are content to just let things coast along, and most people are too lazy to ask any questions.
Dont forget, Churchill became Prime Minister at the age of 77. And Donald Trump is now 71. So I think an age limits are far less necessary than term limits.
Hatch still has to serve out his term, which means the President Pro Tempore will not revert to Cochran until a year from now. We can only hope Cochran has to retire this next year. Give him a silver drool cup and a parade and send him on his way as well.
Pope Benedict XVI retired at 85, IIRC the only Pontiff ever to do so. He’s 90 and would be preferable to the current jerk in the Vatican.
Anyway, Thad Cochran is McConnell’s senile puppet & with Mittens on his way to the Senate, none of this is good news. Sure hope DJT’s tax bill won’t turn out to be his only major victory.
As far as I’m concerned (and, of course, it means nothing to anyone else) Benedict is STILL the Pope. That other fellow ...
“Term limits: 12 years and out and no defined benefit plan - 401k and NO continuation of any healthcare benefits.”
This ^^^
Tough first news day of 2018.
Hatch retiring and now this about Cochran.
And, who knows how much longer McShame will be around???
“Anyway, Thad Cochran is McConnells senile puppet & with Mittens on his way to the Senate, none of this is good news.”
Just because the prick is a mormon he is taxachussets at heart and will take Utahans guns at the blink of an eye. Hope they figure that out.
Cochran can barely drool pablum. We’ve painted our country into a corner with these Senators over 75 with mental disabilities and serious health issues.
No term limits.
I don’t believe in term limits. You have inexperienced people who can’t handle terrorist attacks, etc.
You need SMART people, people who have TRUST AND HONESTY.
How long has it been since the Senator was seen in DC?
